🧠 Your mood is not just a feeling. And it’s not just brain chemistry either.
Our emotional well-being is shaped by many interacting factors: multiple neurotransmitter systems, hormones (such as cortisol), sleep quality, physical activity, inflammation, chronic health conditions, stress, as well as our thoughts and environment.
Of course, we can’t control all of these factors. But small daily habits can support many of the biological processes that influence how we feel.
One important thing to remember is that a single action almost never affects just one system.

You’ve probably heard advice like:
“Boost your dopamine!”
But having chronically high dopamine is not the goal. Dysregulation of the dopamine system has been linked to addiction, impulsive behavior, and several psychiatric disorders. What really matters is not maximizing a single neurotransmitter, but maintaining a healthy balance across the systems involved in motivation, adaptation, and recovery.

Take a simple run, for example. It can:
✔ stimulate the release of endorphins;
✔ increase endocannabinoid levels;
✔ activate dopamine pathways involved in motivation;
✔ influence the serotonergic system;
✔ help lower cortisol levels over time with regular exercise;
✔ improve sleep quality.
This is why modern neuroscience is moving away from the idea of “happiness hormones” as independent on/off switches.

That’s why, at Healsens, we look beyond mood alone.
📈 Every day you can track:
• Mood
• Energy
• Stress
🧪 If laboratory results are available, you can also assess:
• Cortisol
• DHEA-S
• Stress Resilience Index
• Allostatic Load — a measure of the cumulative physiological burden that chronic stress places on the body.
The app also includes practices that weren’t chosen by chance: Kirtan Kriya meditation, breathing exercises, and Yoga Nidra. These approaches have been investigated in clinical research and can support processes involved in stress reduction, recovery, and emotional well-being.
Sometimes we feel “fine” even when our body has been operating under chronic stress for a long time.
And conversely, small daily habits can gradually reduce that accumulated burden, even before w

🍵 Matcha and green tea: what research suggests

Both matcha and traditional green tea contain catechins — plant compounds studied in relation to antioxidant activity, inflammation pathways, and cardiometabolic health.¹ ²

One of the most studied catechins is EGCG, or epigallocatechin gallate. Research suggests that green tea polyphenols are linked to antioxidant activity and may help support endothelial function — the function of the inner lining of blood vessels.

Matcha and green tea differ in how they are consumed.
When green tea is brewed, active compounds move into the infusion, while the tea leaves remain in the teapot.

Matcha is made from powdered whole tea leaves. Because of this, it often contains a higher concentration of catechins per serving compared with traditionally brewed green tea.

Matcha also contains a combination of caffeine and L-theanine — an amino acid studied in relation to attention, focus, and a subjective feeling of calm alertness.

Some studies also suggest that green tea compounds may play a role in lipid metabolism and fat oxidation, although the size of this effect depends on overall lifestyle, diet, and individual biology.

It is important to remember that neither matcha nor green tea is a “youth drink.” Their potential benefits are most meaningful as part of daily habits: enough sleep, balanced nutrition, physical activity, and stress management.

☕ Practical tip: green tea is usually best brewed with water at 70–80°C. Boiling water can make it taste more bitter and may reduce how enjoyable the drink feels.

⚠️ Green tea catechins may reduce the absorption of non-heme iron from food. If your iron or ferritin levels are low, it may be better to drink tea between meals rather than with food.²

💧 Even Mild Dehydration May Affect Your Mood

Studies by Armstrong et al. (2012) and Ganio et al. (2011) found that losing as little as 1–1.5% of body water may be associated with:

😕 lower mood
😴 increased fatigue
🧠 reduced concentration

This level of dehydration can occur in everyday life — for example, when spending long hours in a warm environment, staying busy throughout the day, or simply not drinking enough fluids.

Have you ever noticed a connection between how much water you drink and how you feel?

With Healsens, you can now track both your beverage intake (water, tea, coffee, and more) and your mood, helping you discover patterns that are unique to you.
