In 1967, Dian Fossey began a study that reshaped conservation science: mountain gorillas, long characterized as dangerous, were shown to be shy, socially complex animals that posed no threat to humans. Her research became the foundation for decades of conservation work.

Gorillas are what conservationists call an umbrella species.
Because they rely on vast, unbroken stretches of forest to survive, protecting their range indirectly protects thousands of other species sharing that habitat.

Fewer than 1,200 mountain gorillas remain in the wild today.

Today is World Cleanup Day 🌍

Over 2.7 billion people globally lack access to formal waste collection, leading to open-air waste burning that generates up to 1.8 billion tonnes of CO2e every year (UNEP).

While physical cleanups clear visible waste from the ground, trees act as nature’s continuous cleaning system long after:

• Roots filter local water tables and prevent soil wash-out
• Canopies trap dust and atmospheric pollutants
• Healthy forests rebuild degraded topsoil from the inside out

Removing waste stops the harm, planting trees regenerates the ecosystem.

On August 4, 2026, Colombia signed a resolution closing more than 483,000 km² of its Amazon region to new oil, gas and large-scale mining development.

The decision prevents 43 hydrocarbon projects and 286 mining applications from moving forward across the region.

The Amazon stores enormous amounts of carbon. It helps regulate rainfall across South America, supports exceptional biodiversity, and plays a critical role in the global climate system.

The resolution was signed just days before a new government took office, and because it was introduced through a ministerial resolution, its long-term impact will depend on how firmly it is maintained.

Reforestation in the Amazon is a significant part of our work. Through projects across South America, we plant trees to restore degraded landscapes, rebuild forest cover and support the recovery of these ecosystems.

A new planting site is ready at our Geita Tree Plantation for Community project in Tanzania, with 50,000 trees prepared for planting. 🌱

56 farmers will carry out the planting through an agroforestry approach, combining support trees with productive fruit species like Mangifera indica (mango), Citrus limon (lemon), and Citrus sinensis (orange).

This mix supports healthier growing conditions while also creating food and income opportunities alongside the farmers’ existing crops.

In 2024, we planted this woodlot in Kocheka Subcounty, as part of our Preservation of Mt. Elgon Ecosystem project in Uganda.

Two years later, the transformation is remarkable. The once-bare land is now home to more than 200 thriving trees, showing what is possible when communities invest in tree growing and restoration.

🌳 Winter is a busy season at our Bosques Yungas project in Argentina.

When the cold set in, our team wrapped protective covers around the youngest trees to shield them from frost, filled nursery bags with soil ready to receive seeds, and tended to seedlings waiting for the warmth of spring.

And the good news? The trees from last planting season are already starting to sprout. But perhaps the most meaningful moment of all is seeing local children get involved.

Everything we plant today is the world they will inherit tomorrow.

Forests and water are connected in more ways than we might realize. 🌳💧

Trees help create rain, protect watersheds, hold water in the soil and keep moisture moving through the atmosphere.

And we all depend on that cycle.

When forests disappear, rainfall can weaken with them. When we bring forests back, we help restore the water cycle that connects us all.
