It’s documented that I’ve opposed Zionism since the early ‘90s, supported Palestine through my performances in Ibiza during my residency at Music Box at Manumission in 2002, and while performing with my band Cantankerous since 2003. I only state this to say that 7 October 2023 was not a defining time for me and millions of others aware of the history surrounding Palestine, the birth of Zionism in the late 1800s, and the Nakba. It’s clear from my music, lyrics, and social media that I advocate for freedom and justice for Palestine, and oppose the right-wing Israeli government, the IOF, and their expansionist goals, settler violence and murder, plus homes and land theft.
Since choosing to terminate my working relationship and friendship with George O’Dowd (p/k/a Boy George) in 1990/91, I have refrained from commenting on his posts or engaging with him, and have done my best to ignore him when confronted by him, despite numerous efforts by him to try to draw me out and converse with me in public spaces. This has been witnessed by numerous people over a course of more than 30 years. Despite his continued attempts to approach me and directly speak with me, I have remained steadfast in ignoring him — I simply turn away or walk away silently. This has been witnessed on multiple occasions. My reasons for doing so remain largely private at this stage.
The lyrics of George O’Dowd’s new song, which appear to deny the ongoing genocide, led me to break my silence, and I commented on his post. The first image is my initial comment; the second image is from George O’Dowd — I’ll let his words speak for him.
The coalition led by Likud, alongside Shas, Otzma Yehudit, the Religious Zionist Party, and New Hope, does not represent the Jewish diaspora, and Zionism should not be conflated with Judaism. “The Jews” are not committing a genocide - some people who are Jewish are. Millions of Jewish people actively protest the genocide globally. I am not going to be silenced by threats, bullying, insults or any level of pile on. I’m not going to pretend I wont or dont need support. Intifada now.
