One of the things I enjoy most about residential architecture is working with the sequence of spaces. How one room leads to another, what you see from a doorway and how a single curve can change your perception of the entire plan.

I have a theory the best kitchens have a certain generosity to them. They make you want to take your time in the morning, make a proper breakfast and sit down instead of rushing out the door.

There is something about designing a kitchen that is inevitably about pleasure and I think that might be why they are some of my favourite spaces to work on.

MORNING LIGHT

There is a particular moment in the morning when the light reaches all the way into this kitchen, catching the stone and changing the colours of the cabinetry completely.

It’s one of those things you can draw and plan for, but never quite know until you see the space being lived in. And perhaps one of my favourite parts of seeing a project finished, watching the light become part of it.

Last week we travelled to Porto with De La Espada and began our journey at the Serralves with a guided tour of the recently opened Álvaro Siza wing and the iconic work of Frank Gehry.

It was one of those days that reminds you why you fell in love with architecture in the first place. Form, light and material continue to shape the way we feel and connect with a space.
