Laetitia Ky is an Ivorian artist who transforms her own hair into intricate sculptural artworks inspired by African history, culture, and identity. Using wire, braids, and remarkable technical skill, she creates elaborate forms that explore themes of feminism, colonialism, self-love, freedom, and representation. Her artistic journey began after discovering an archive of photographs showing African women wearing hairstyles from before colonization, revealing a rich visual tradition that had largely been forgotten or overlooked. In many pre-colonial African societies, hairstyles carried deep meaning. They could communicate age, social status, religion, wealth, ethnicity, or marital status, while also serving as symbols of power, spirituality, and community. Through her work, Ky revives these traditions and reinterprets them for a contemporary audience, transforming hair into a living medium that preserves memory, culture, and history.
