She would have turned 30 in April – but now her last flight took her to the aircraft graveyard in Teruel, Spain, on January 8, 2025.
In service with Lufthansa since April 1996, the A340-313 with the registration D-AIGL and the
christening name “Herne” flew millions of miles around the globe. With its retirement, the global fleet of A340-300s has become even smaller; as of today, Lufthansa now operates 13 of these aircraft, and these too will be taken out of service by 2027.
In Teruel, the D-AIGL now serves as a source of spare parts for its sisters that remain in service for the time being.
