Streets of Valencia wonderful!
HOW DID THE HOLY GRAIL END UP IN VALENCIA?
It is one of the questions I am asked most often on my Streets of Valencia experience. Valencia Cathedral claims to possess the cup used by Jesus Christ at the Last Supper. But assuming for a moment that it really is the Holy Grail, how on earth did it end up here, more than 3,000 kilometres from Jerusalem?
The story begins in Jerusalem around AD 30–33. According to Christian tradition, after the Last Supper the cup passed to Saint Peter, who took it to Rome, where it was preserved by successive popes. In AD 258, during the Roman emperor Valerian’s persecution of Christians, Pope Sixtus II was executed. Tradition says that before his death he entrusted the chalice to his deacon, Saint Lawrence, who arranged for it to be sent to his native area of Huesca in Spain.
When Muslim armies entered the Iberian Peninsula in the early 8th century, the chalice was supposedly moved into the Pyrenees for protection. It passed through several locations before eventually reaching the spectacular monastery of San Juan de la Peña, hidden beneath a huge overhanging rock in Aragón. It is believed to have arrived there during the 11th century, remaining in the monastery for roughly 300 years.
This is also where legend begins to turn into documented history. On 26 September 1399, the monks of San Juan de la Peña handed the chalice to King Martín I of Aragón, known as Martín the Humane. The original document recording the transfer still survives in the Archive of the Crown of Aragón. It describes the object as the stone chalice in which Christ was believed to have consecrated his blood at the Last Supper. Martín took it to his royal palace in Zaragoza, and it later travelled with the royal collection to Barcelona.
Then came the man responsible for bringing it to Valencia: King Alfonso V of Aragón, Alfonso the Magnanimous. Around 1424, Alfonso moved his court and royal relics to Valencia, bringing the chalice with him to the Royal Palace. But Alfonso had expensive ambitions. His military campaigns to conquer Naples required huge amounts of money, and he borrowed from the Church, using his collection of precious relics as security.
On 18 March 1437, the royal relics, including the Holy Chalice, were handed over to Valencia Cathedral. And, apart from periods when it was removed for protection, that is where it has remained for almost 590 years.
So what evidence is there that it could actually be genuine? The most important part is not the gold handles, jewels or base, which were added during the Middle Ages. It is the small reddish-brown agate cup at the top. Archaeological studies have dated this ancient cup broadly to between the 4th century BC and 1st century AD, with some studies favouring the 2nd–1st centuries BC. In other words, it is genuinely ancient and could have existed in the Middle East during the lifetime of Jesus.
What we do not have is an unbroken documentary trail from Jerusalem to Valencia. The first completely secure document identifying this particular object as Christ’s chalice dates from 1399. That thousand-year gap is the problem. Archaeology can tell us that the cup is old enough and of the right general type, but it cannot tell us who drank from it 2,000 years ago.
Even so, the Catholic Church has treated the Valencia chalice with extraordinary importance. Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass with it in 1982, followed by Pope Benedict XVI in 2006. Today it sits inside the Chapel of the Holy Chalice in Valencia Cathedral, just a few metres from the crowds walking through Plaza de la Reina every day.
Is it really the cup used at the Last Supper? Nobody can prove that it is. But the cup itself really is ancient, its documented history stretches back more than 600 years, and it has now been sitting here in Valencia for almost six centuries.
