As extreme heat events become more frequent, European cities are leveraging data spaces to build cooler, healthier urban environments. Beat The Heat Phase II, funded under the EU European Data Space for Smart Communities DEP initiative, is officially scaling its cross-border impact!
Building on initial achievements in Cartagena (Spain), Naples, and Taranto (Italy), Phase II formally integrates the municipalities of Kalamata (Greece) and Codogno (Italy) into a shared data ecosystem focused on climate neutrality and mitigating the urban heat island effect.
As the lead partner of Phase II, the Municipality of Kalamata is spearheading real-world innovation by putting shared data into action:
🚶 Pedestrian Climate Resilience (EcoRoutes): Kalamata is deploying the EcoRoutes service, previously validated in Cartagena, to guide citizens and visitors along shaded corridors, targeting a reduction in heat exposure of over 1.5°C during daily commutes. The mobile app will also feature a "Heat Wave Mode" to deliver real-time emergency alerts.
🚴 Smart Bicycle Navigation (EasyRide): The city is introducing EasyRide, an intelligent routing engine for cyclists that dynamically integrates microclimate heat maps, traffic density, topography, and air quality metrics.
♻️ Interoperable Data Infrastructure: Kalamata is integrating 10 local atmospheric sensors and municipal datasets through an open FIWARE architecture and Eclipse Foundation's EDC connectors, demonstrating seamless data space federation for smart cities.
Led by a strong consortium including Libelium, Local AI, and Politecnico di Milano, BeatTheHeat Phase II demonstrates the technical feasibility and cost-effectiveness of pan-European data spaces for urban sustainability.
Together, we are converting real-time environmental data into actionable mobility solutions for safer, climate-resilient cities.

⚡ As electric vehicle (EV) adoption accelerates, fire safety at charging stations has become a critical priority for infrastructure operators.
High-power charging stations operate under heavy electrical loads, presenting risks such as cable overheating and lithium-ion battery thermal runaway. Standard fire detection systems often trigger only after smoke or flames are already present—frequently too late to prevent major equipment damage or public safety hazards.
By combining IoT thermal monitoring with real-time alert mechanisms, operators can transition from reactive emergency response to proactive risk prevention.
Key Advantages of Smart Fire Detection
✅ Pre-emptive thermal sensing: Thermal sensors continuous monitor equipment temperatures to detect abnormal heat spikes long before visible smoke or flames emerge.
✅ Automated real-time alerts: Instant notifications enable station managers to execute automated power cut-offs and alert emergency services immediately.
✅ Network-wide oversight: Cloud-connected IoT platforms allow central management teams to monitor multiple charging sites across vast geographic areas 24/7.
✅ Asset & hazard protection: Early detection safeguards expensive charging hardware, adjacent vehicles, and surrounding infrastructure against catastrophic loss.
Building resilient, safe EV charging networks requires integrating intelligent sensing technology into standard infrastructure planning.

The latest IoT Analytics report makes one thing clear on hashtag : the market is fragmented, and the real value lies not in the platform itself, but in the domain expertise and the results.
In the industry, there's a common distinction between those who capture the data (hashtag ) and those who perform the visual and predictive magic (Simulation/hashtag ). But when it comes to Smart Cities, Sustainability, and Infrastructure, this separation is a risk.
A digital twin fed with poor data will only simulate errors more rapidly.
At Libelium, we address this challenge by connecting the most critical elements of the technology stack mentioned in the report:
1️⃣ Physical Truth (Layers 1 and 2): We deploy the IoT foundation. If we don't measure air, water, or traffic with absolute precision, the twin is born blind.
5️⃣ Intelligence (Layer 5): We don't stop at the hardware. We apply Artificial Intelligence and simulation engines to this data to predict scenarios, optimize resources, and enable managers to make proactive decisions.
As the study rightly points out, "No single provider owns the entire ecosystem." We integrate with the best agnostically, but we guarantee that the journey from the physical sensor to the AI prediction is conducted with the utmost rigor within our domain.
The goal isn't to have a pretty 3D model; it's to know what will happen tomorrow with air quality or water consumption in your city and how to prevent a crisis.
🔗 And you, where do you see the biggest challenge in implementing Digital Twins: obtaining reliable data or predictive simulation capabilities?

🇬🇧 A gigabyte of data required by an active database costs around $0.21/month. Projects dedicated to the dual green and digital transition require gigabytes upon gigabytes of data, so the problem is clear.
And for medium-sized cities, this economic barrier hinders technological advancement.
To overcome this economic bottleneck, hashtag incorporates the hashtag model into its data architecture, reducing data storage costs to as low as $0.023 per month.
