From 19 to 22 May, 2026 at UNESCO will bring together voices and perspectives from across the African continent through a vibrant programme of high-level discussions, youth forums, exhibitions, cinema, literature, fashion and cultural performances.

Organised with the Africa Group, this year’s edition will spotlight key issues shaping Africa’s present and future, from water governance and climate resilience to cultural heritage, digital transformation, sustainable development and youth empowerment.

Throughout the week, policymakers, artists, researchers, civil society representatives, authors and young leaders will come together to exchange ideas, strengthen partnerships and celebrate the diversity, creativity and dynamism of Africa.

2026 will take place from 19 to 22 May at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

🚀 Types of Missiles and How They Work
Missiles are powerful weapons designed to reach and strike a target from a long distance. They are widely used in modern military systems for defense and strategic operations. Missiles are guided during flight to hit their targets accurately.
🔹 Main Types of Missiles
1️⃣ Ballistic Missiles
Ballistic missiles are launched into the sky and follow a curved path (trajectory) before falling toward their target.
Examples: Intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).
✔ Used for very long distances.
2️⃣ Cruise Missiles
Cruise missiles fly at a low altitude and are powered during most of their flight. They can change direction and avoid detection.
✔ Very accurate and used for precision strikes.
3️⃣ Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAM)
These missiles are launched from the ground to destroy aircraft or other missiles in the air.
✔ Used in air defense systems.
4️⃣ Air-to-Air Missiles (AAM)
These are launched from one aircraft to destroy another aircraft.
✔ Used during aerial combat.
5️⃣ Surface-to-Surface Missiles (SSM)
These missiles are launched from the ground to strike targets on land or sea.
⚙️ How Missiles Work
Missiles generally work using four main systems:
1️⃣ Propulsion System – Provides the power to move the missile forward (usually rocket engines).
2️⃣ Guidance System – Helps the missile find and track the target using GPS, radar, or infrared sensors.
3️⃣ Control System – Adjusts the missile’s direction during flight.
4️⃣ Warhead – The explosive or payload that damages the target.

Modern missiles can travel faster than the speed of sound and hit targets hundreds or even thousands of kilometers away.
