GADAA BANK HEADQUARTERS - “BAALLII: The Peaceful Transfer of Leadership”

The proposed Gadaa Bank Headquarters in Mexico Area, Addis Ababa, is inspired by Baallii, the peaceful transfer of leadership within the Oromo Gadaa System. The architectural concept translates ideas of unity, continuity, responsibility, cooperation, and democratic governance into a contemporary architectural language.

The façade metaphorically represents the hands of two Abbaa Gadaa passing the Gadaa stick during the ceremonial transfer of leadership. Five vertical façade clusters represent the five Gadaa parties (Luba), while the central Odaa Canopy evokes the Odaa Tree as a place of gathering and community. The recessed central axis symbolizes the Gadaa stick, expressing continuity and shared responsibility, while the entrance draws inspiration from the roots of the Odaa Tree—connecting leadership, identity, and development to strong community foundations.

Architecture as a reflection of culture, identity, and collective responsibility.
