Real talk: Fiji can’t rely on sugar forever 🌾➡️🥬

Sugar prices are low, mills are struggling, and young people aren’t going into it. As a farmer yourself you know this already.

The government needs to invest in things that:
Feed Fijians first - food security
Export high value - more money per acre

things the government SHOULD invest in instead of just sugarcane:

Diversified Food Crops + Export Vegetables
Why: Cabbage, beans, cucumber, eggplant, chillies. You grow these already.
The play: Packhouses, cold storage, and contracts to hotels/export.
1 acre of beans can earn more than 5 acres of cane.
For farmers: Guaranteed buyers. No more "throw it away at the market"

Livestock + Dairy
Why: Fiji imports so much beef, chicken, milk powder.
The play: Feedlots, abattoirs, dairy co-ops. Use cane land for grass.
For farmers: Steady income every week, not once a year like cane

Agro-processing + Value Adding
Why: Raw sugar = $500/ton. Bottled chilli sauce = $20,000/ton
The play: Fund factories for: coconut oil, ginger powder, cassava chips, fruit juice, frozen veg
For farmers: You sell processed, not raw. More profit stays in Fiji

Climate-Smart Farming + Irrigation
Why: Droughts and floods are killing cane and veg
The play: Drip irrigation, solar pumps, shade houses, resilient seeds
For farmers: Plant all year. Not just when it rains

Instead of: 10 acres cane = $8,000 once a year
Better: 2 acres beans + 1 acre cabbage + contract to resort = $15,000-$25,000 year round

The government needs to put money into:
Market access - Not just grow, but SELLFinance - Low interest loans for young farmers, not just big mills
Infrastructure - Roads, cold chain, internet so you can sell online

Sugar won’t disappear overnight. But we need a Plan B so farmers don’t get stuck.
