RANGER ANARE DRAIVA

Today, 1 September, we remember another of the 457 British service personnel who lost their lives during the campaign in Afghanistan.

Ranger Anare Draiva
1st Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment

On 1 September 2006, Anare was serving in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, when his patrol came under attack from insurgents.

During the fighting, Anare was killed by enemy fire. Another soldier, Lance Corporal Paul Muirhead, was seriously wounded in the same attack and would tragically die from his injuries several days later.

Anare was just 27 years old.

Originally from Fiji, he had previously served with the Royal Irish Regiment in Iraq and was described by those who knew him as a strong, courageous and immensely popular soldier.

When the opportunity came to deploy to Afghanistan, he was among the first to volunteer.

A young man who travelled thousands of miles from the country of his birth and ultimately gave his life wearing the uniform of the British Army.

Twenty years later, his name and his service must not become simply another statistic.

Ranger Anare Draiva, of the 457.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ We will remember him.
