Statement by Savenaca Narube, leader of Unity Fiji

“With the attendance of over 900 supporters at Nahigatoka Village in Sigatoka on Friday 18th September, Unity Fiji consolidated its position as a leading contender for the next government in Fiji,” says Savenaca Narube, leader of Unity Fiji.

“I was encouraged and impressed by the turn out from all across Fiji. They came in ferries, buses, minibuses, cars and trucks from as far away as Bua in Vanua Levu to attend the AGM, the launch of our manifesto and the rally. Some took half a day to reach Sigatoka. The big village hall overflowed into the grounds,” adds Narube.

“To me, the big turnout confirms that the momentum for a change of government is gathering speed across the country and is unstoppable. The people increasingly feel betrayed by this Government. They expected it to break the shackles that Fiji First left behind, but instead they got busy taking care of themselves. They have totally lost touch with the ordinary people,” states the leader of Unity Fiji.

The leader reconfirmed that the party through its banner of “Leadership You Can Trust”, had the integrity, courage, strength, experience and commitment to rescue Fiji and transform lives.

Narube expressed the party’s and his own respect and appreciation to the Yavusa of Louvatu to Ratu Orisi Nabekasiga Makutu who was present throughout the event. He thanked the iTaukei Were ni Dri for his gracious hospitality.

“I believe that we achieved our vision of uniting the country in a common purpose of change that will inspire our youths and transform our lives irrespective of race and gender.”

“Unity Fiji is the first party to launch its 2026 manifesto. We fully understand the risks that other parties will copy our manifesto as they did in 2022, but we leave it to the people to decide who is genuine and credible and who possess the knowledge and experience to deliver what they promise to do,” explains Narube.

Welfare in your hand

Unity Fiji will take care of the people. One of the ways of taking care of the people is through social welfare programs.

What many people may not know is that the social welfare funding provided to the most vulnerable members of society has been well below by a maximum of 96% of the 2019-20 Basic Needs Poverty Line [BNPL] of $41.91 per adult per week, which is equivalent to just $5.98 a day

We have called this initiative ‘Welfare in your Hands’ because that is exactly how we plan to calculate the level of funding for our Social Welfare recipients.

It will start with the predetermined amount that each recipient will receive ‘in their hands’ and not the ‘trickle down’ sum that fluctuates with the percentage increase or decrease in the budget estimates on the whims of the government.
For example, the Poverty Benefit Scheme and Child Protection are both funded on a per household basis while the other programmes are funded on a per recipient basis, yet there is no distinction between a per household funding vs the per individual funding.

With the average poor household size of 4.3, the welfare support is a miserable $0.23 cents a day.

Likewise, the Child Protection programme, amounts to $6.28 per week per child or $0.89 cents per day.

This funding method is not adequate nor fair. It perpetuates poverty. We will overhaul this methodology.

With our ‘Welfare in your Hands’, Unity Fiji will ensure all our social welfare recipients get the level of financial support they need to make a real difference in their lives.

“WE WILL PUT MONEY IN PEOPLE’S HANDS”

Statement by Savenaca Narube, leader of Unity Fiji and former Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji

“The increase in the cost of living is here to stay,” says Savenaca Narube, the leader of Unity Fiji and former Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji.
He explains, “The rise in the cost of living can be traced back to the supply bottlenecks of COVID 19. That was three years ago. Many experts predicted that prices would return to pre-crisis levels after the COVID. That has not happened.”
“The reason is that other global events continue to impose upward pressures on global prices. One of these factors is the global trade and tariff war which has not ended. The fuel crisis has added fuel to the fire. Fiji has no control on these global events,” says the former Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji.
“It is therefore clear to me that the increases in import prices are here to stay, and they may even increase further. In Fiji, these higher prices have ingrained themselves into the local cost structure. That is why every local price has risen and may continue to do so.” “The burden that these higher prices impose on the families is enormous. It leads to many social problems that Fiji faces now.”
“Therefore, as a responsible government, Unity Fiji will look not only at the expenditure side of the coin but also on the income side,” stresses the leader of Unity Fiji.

“We have carefully designed measures on both sides of the ledger. While we have been advocating for some time a more equitable sharing of the cost-of-living burden by corporations, government and consumers and the active use of exchange rate as a policy instrument, we are also including measures to put more money in people’s hands.”

Narube concludes, “We will be announcing these measures when we launch our manifesto on Friday 18th in Sigatoka. The launch will be streamed live.”

UNITY FIJI PLEDGES TO DOUBLE GDP IN 12 YEARS”

“Unity Fiji will be the first political party to launch its 2026 Manifesto at its AGM at Nahigatoka village in Nadroga on Friday 18th September,” announces Savenaca Narube the leader of Unity Fiji.

“We wanted to be first political party off the election ramp this year because there are just too many things to solve,” adds Narube.

“Our manifesto is wrapped around leadership that people can trust. It responses to the tragic loss of trust in this coalition Government. They simply have failed to deliver despite paying themselves huge pay increases as soon as they entered government. We had high hopes that they will change the many hurtful decisions that the Fiji First government had left behind. But after nearly four years, many of us feel betrayed,” said Narube.

“This Unity Fiji manifesto offers credible solutions to the multiple problems that the Fiji First and this government have burdened the people with. There are no quick fixes, but you have to know where to start, and that requires experience and knowledge—something that distinguishes Unity Fiji from the rest of the pack.”
“Our starting point is the family, where we plan to work hard with the faith-based organisations, the communities and government ministries to rebuild family values, inspire our youths, and transform mindsets.”

“Very importantly, we have made up our minds that we will not be limited by what the past governments have done. We have the courage and the innovation to chart new directions that will transform the lives of everyone irrespective of ethnicity, religion and residential location.”

“Let us be realistic where we are. This beautiful country with great potential has simply lost its way in the past three decades because of self-serving politicians, growing corruption, no vision, and wrong strategies. It is time to jump off the merry-go-round for the sake of our future generations. This manifesto is our road map to this new and exciting journey which will double our economy in 12 years,” says the former Permanent Secretary for Finance.

“As the only Permanent Secretary for Finance who had posted a budget surplus in the modern history of Fiji, the people can trust us to be fiscally responsible. We have costed all the measures in our manifesto, and despite raising the budget allocation to essential ministries like health, education and housing, we will reduce the budget deficit from 7% of GDP in the current year’s budget to only 1%. We will be able to achieve this by stopping the irresponsible wastages of taxpayers’ money by Fiji First and this coalition Government. It means that Unity Fiji will borrow $900 million less in a year than the coalition government—and that will start the difficult but necessary process of lightening the load of debt repayment by young families,” explains the former Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji.

“Finally, our promise to the people is simply this--we will deliver what we promised to do. You can trust us to do that, because I, as the leader of the party, have clearly demonstrated this credibility in every position that I have faithfully and successfully held in Fiji,”

“OUR PRIORITY IS THE COST OF LIVING”

“Unity Fiji’s top priority is to cushion the impact of the rise in the cost of living on families,” emphasises Savenaca Narube, the leader of Unity Fiji and former Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji. Narube was responding to media questions about the priorities of Unity Fiji in this election campaign.

“The continuing rise in the prices of imported goods and fuel has filtered into all domestic prices. This is permanent. Therefore, policy makers must take this into consideration and act now to help the families,” adds Narube.
“But sadly, we have seen both the current and past governments throw their hands in the air in surrender and said that since the higher prices were driven from abroad, they could not do anything to cushion the rise in prices. This is not acceptable to the people,” said the former Governor.

Narube adds, “Since the pass through of imported prices is now embedded into local prices, we have no choice but to address this important issue from both the expenditure and income side.”

“Unity has repeated many times several options that we can take to cushion the cost-of-living increase. We have articulated these policy measures in our 2026 manifesto due for release at the AGM in Nahigatoka village next Friday.

“This is not a budgeting issue only. The high cost of living creates many tensions in the s families which may affect the values, health, and education of our children and grandchildren.

Narube ends, “Finally, we realize that the Ministers do not feel the need to act to address the cost of living because they are insulated by the huge increase in their salaries which they paid themselves after six months in office. They therefore do not feel the pinch that the ordinary people are feeling. That clearly reflects their priorities.

STOP MANIPULATING PEOPLE AS POLITICAL PAWNS”

“It appears that the Prime Minister is again trying to use the people for his political gain,” warns Savenaca Narube, the leader of Unity Fiji and former Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji.

Narube elaborated, “There was no reason whatsoever for the Prime Minister to start the fearmongering on the Constitution. But that is his style. He knows that his coalition government has nothing to show the voters for awarding themselves huge increases in salaries when families could not buy enough food to feed the families.”
“All that the PM needed to say was that the Constitution Reviews Committee (CRC) has completed his report, and he would make sure that due transparent and legal processes will be followed in independently reviewing their recommendations.”

“Make no mistake about it. The PM is deliberately using the CRC’s report to spread fear and uncertainty amongst the people on sensitive issues like race and religion before the elections. It will not work this time.”

Narube concludes, “It is time that the people of all ethnic groups tell the PM to stop. There is no need to fracture this beautiful country again. The people have had enough. All political parties must contest these elections on their abilities to resolve the challenges that the people are facing. The people deserve nothing less.”
