Meet Geoff Kalmet Kalsrap, a Ni-Vanuatu serving as a UN Volunteer Electoral Assistance Officer at the Vanuatu Electoral Office in Port Vila.

Geoff's mission is to ensure every citizen has a voice. This means getting ballot boxes safely from the Torres Islands in the far north down to Aneityum in the south. Because the islands are so scattered, transport ships only visit some communities once a month.

Geoff and his team go the extra mile. During deployment trips, they use their extra boat space to help local students travel to school and assist residents heading to urban hubs.

"This reality is sobering," Geoff says. "But seeing villagers receive their ID cards and cast their votes gives me a deep sense of fulfillment."

Volunteering has also launched Geoff's career. In just ten months, he went from administrative tasks to designing youth civic education and leading major workshops.

As part of our field mission to Kiribati, the UNV Pacific team connected for a fantastic virtual catch-up with Ms. Gulbahor Nematova, the Deputy Resident Representative for the UNDP North Pacific Office.

We focused on finding new, practical ways to get UN Volunteers on the ground to support active and upcoming UNDP projects across the subregion.

The conversation spotlighted great opportunities to use volunteerism and spark youth engagement. These steps will directly support local teams and bring lasting, positive changes to our Pacific communities.
