A Beautiful WIMBUM Tradition: The Respect We Show Our Fon

My people, have you ever wondered why, in the WIMBUM land of the North West Region of Cameroon, people behave differently when they are in the presence of a Fon? 🙏🏻 Humble greetings to HR. Nganjo 🙏🏻🙇🏼‍♀️greetings to our star Mubi🙏🏻

For us, respect for the Fon is not just spoken it is demonstrated through our actions, posture, and even the way we speak.

In Mbum tradition, a man or woman does not simply extend their hand to greet the Fon. The greeting comes with humility and respect.

For women especially, you will notice something beautiful: a lady is expected to bend down when she approaches or speaks to the Fon. She does not stand casually before the Fon or stare directly into his eyes. Traditionally, women look down while speaking to the Fon, as a sign of reverence.

And there is even a special way of speaking to a Fon or Queen.

When addressing them, you don’t speak as though you are talking to only one person. Even when the Fon is sitting alone, you refer to the Fon as “They” rather than “he.” This respectful plural form reflects the dignity and position of the traditional ruler.

These customs may look simple to someone seeing them for the first time, but to the Mbum people, they carry a deeper meaning—honour, humility, and recognition of traditional authority.

Our cultures are filled with little details that tell powerful stories about who we are.
