While I was racing across the Atlantic, another Malizia adventure was unfolding much further north… 🇬🇱⛵️
Our Malizia Explorer has been in Greenland with a research team from the Alfred Wegener Institute, carrying out important scientific work in Kangertittivaq, the largest fjord system in the world.
And I have to say, I’m incredibly proud to see this project in action.
The scientists onboard have been studying how Atlantic Water enters and spreads through the fjord system, helping us better understand the interaction between warming ocean waters and Greenland’s glaciers.
They have also been listening below the surface. 🎧🌊 Using acoustic monitoring, the team is studying the underwater soundscape and the impact of human-made noise, particularly from increasing vessel and cruise ship traffic, on this remote Arctic environment and its wildlife.
When we launched Malizia Explorer, this was exactly the kind of mission we dreamed of.
A sailing vessel able to bring scientists and their equipment to remote places, collect valuable data and help connect ocean science with people around the world.
For years, we have been collecting ocean data while racing with our IMOCA. With Malizia Explorer, we can take this commitment even further and give science its own platform at sea.
So while one Malizia was racing, the other was exploring. 💙
A huge thank you to the AWI researchers, our Malizia Explorer crew and everyone behind this mission. I can’t wait to hear more about what they discovered!

“It was such a privilege to sail with this fantastic team, such a good spirit. The crew were amazing; they never thought of giving up, even when we had the foil issue.
The boat is incredibly fast upwind and when she is flying she is faster than everyone else. After we hit something we had harder times as we were unable to rake our foil which meant we could not go as fast as we would have liked. I wrote to the architect Antoine Koch and told him that I did the best fifteen minutes of steering a boat ever in my life, it just feels incredible, the power of flying, it was the most incredible experience of my sailing life.
It was a great regatta for us. Having four boats in sight along the coast today was pretty incredible. Until three minutes before the finish, we thought maybe we still had a chance. With a wind shift behind the Île de Groix, we thought we might be able to cross the line in third ahead of DMG Mori Global One. There was a nice two-boat battle between the Japanese boat and us throughout the second half of the day. So overall, it was a fantastic race.
Thank you all for following the race and following us. Soon, we’ll be back racing around the world.”

Malizia 4 and our crew are on their way to the start line! ⛵️

Following today’s dock-out and exhibition start in front of New York City’s iconic landmarks, our crew of Boris, Cole, Justine, Julien and Gauthier sailed past the Statue of Liberty alongside the five other IMOCA, with dedicated spectators braving the rain to give them a nice send-off. 🗽

They are now slowly making their way to the start line, located approximately 100 nautical miles offshore, where they will officially begin racing to Lorient on 2 September at 06:00 local time (12:00 German/French time). ☄️

For the first time in our history, I’ve got a little rivalry going on with Will ahead of The Ocean Race Atlantic… 😏
I’ll be racing onboard our brand-new Malizia 4, while Will will be sailing our previous IMOCA, onboard 11th Hour Racing.
We know each other well, we’ve sailed together, trained together… but once we leave New York, it’s game on. Two boats, two teams, one Atlantic crossing. ⚔️
