You start the morning with a French lesson. A few hours later, you're ordering lunch in French. You stop at a bakery and ask a question. You have a small conversation you couldn't have had a few weeks ago.

None of these moments are in the lesson plan. All of them are part of learning French.

Spotted on the flipchart in a French class in Paris this week: la boue, le marécage, pierre de taille.

Mud, marshland, cut stone. Not the vocabulary you'd expect in a language course — until you realise Paris was built on a swamp, which is exactly where the Marais gets its name, and that the cream-coloured buildings you walk past every day are pierre de taille.

The rest of the board is a discussion plan: an important figure in the history of Paris, opinions on the monuments, the different ways people live here. Real conversations, in French, about the city outside the window.
