By the summer of 1780, the American Revolution had entered a new chapter. After the fall of Charleston, British forces occupied much of South Carolina, shifting the center of the war to the South.

As the conflict spread through the countryside, Loyalist troops led by officers such as Captain Christian Huck sought to crush the Patriot resistance. Homes were burned, suspected rebels were punished, and civilians were intimidated, turning neighbors against one another and bringing the realities of war to local communities.

From today... back to Valley Forge in 1778

As winter settled over Pennsylvania, General George Washington marched nearly 12,000 soldiers, and more than 400 women and children, into Valley Forge. He chose the site for its strong defensive position: high ground, access to fresh water and timber, and enough distance from British-occupied Philadelphia to prevent a surprise attack.

Valley Forge also protected the road to York, Pennsylvania, where the Continental Congress had fled after the British captured Philadelphia. Overnight, the encampment became the fourth-largest population center in the young United States.

Did you know one of the most famous images of the American Revolution isn't historically accurate?

Paul Revere's engraving of the Boston Massacre is one of the best-known images in American history—but it isn't an accurate depiction of what happened on March 5, 1770.

Revere's print portrays British soldiers standing in formation, with Captain Thomas Preston appearing to order his men to fire into a peaceful crowd. In reality, eyewitnesses described a chaotic confrontation in which colonists had been taunting the soldiers and throwing rocks, clubs, and chunks of ice. Testimony also indicated that Captain Preston never gave the order to fire.

Revere even altered details of the scene, including adding the sign "Butcher's Hall" to the Customs House and smoke from a nearby window, reinforcing the image of the British as ruthless oppressors.

Although historically inaccurate, the engraving became a powerful piece of Patriot propaganda. It shaped public opinion, fueled outrage throughout the colonies, and helped build support for the growing resistance movement that would eventually lead to the American Revolution.
