Bolduc flew dangerous bombing missions over occupied Europe, including operations involving heavily defended targets such as Cologne and Nuremberg. An air gunner had to scan the darkness for enemy fighters while flying inside an aircraft loaded with fuel, ammunition and bombs. There was little protection—and often no safe way to escape. Bolduc’s courage under fire earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1944.
