Trio 2: cinnamon dumbo + ivory + ch*****ne

Our local shows really are some of my favourite. August is the month of Scottish Championships which was super busy this year with 6 provisional standards, 87 varieties entries and 74 pet entries. The Beeghos team did not bad!

Can’t believe I forgot to post this 🙈 I took the team down to Carlisle earlier this month for the joint NERS/NFRS show and as always they did me super proud.

I am absolutely over the moon to announce that Banshee has finished her show career on 13 stars, 2x BIS, 1x RBIS and 1x BOA wins (as well as a 3rd Supreme back in September 2025) which should qualify her for the titles of Gold Champion and Show Champion. Just in time before the deadline for claims applications for 2026!! I didn’t think she had it in her as she’s on the older side for a black show rat but I’m so glad I brought her out one last time. She has had a date with a lovely stud buck after the show so hopefully we will have some baby Banshees next month. Miss Berry has also been paired at the same time to the handsome Thyme for some agouti (and maybe cinnamon) babies 👀

The two older litters are well and truly on the move now with all their peepers wide open! The other two aren’t far behind although I am slightly disappointed there is not a single ivory in the youngest litter 😅 I am glad everyone has survived the awful heat wave but I suspect due to the high temperatures the mums may have been slightly reluctant to sit on their nests for prolonged period of times so the kittens aren’t as fat as I’d like them to be at this stage. I’m sure they’ll catch up in no time though ❤️

Our summer litters have safely arrived and oh boy am I excited for these! We have a litter for the PED line which is a mix of ch*****ne with a few silver fawns, a small litter of agouti and cinnamon as well as two litters for the ivory line which are ivory and some other assorted colours in the younger litter in top ear and dumbo. My ch*****ne doe has taken on the five kittens from my agouti doe Polly (bred to Beeghos Out Of Thyme) as Polly unfortunately lacked the maternal instinct to take care of her babies and it was in everyone’s best interest to remove them. They’re thriving with their new mum and adopted siblings ❤️

Dr Squid (PhD from the University of Life) is here to talk to you about Hantavirus, which you'll no doubt have seen in the news recently ⚠️🐀

The cruise ship passengers affected by Hantavirus were infected with the Andes strain, which has a fatality rate of 35-40%, affects the lungs, and is transmissible human-human. It's spread through airborne transmission.

The Andes strain originates from South America and is generally carried by the long tailed Pygmy Rice Rat, and not the humble Norway Rat like Squid and his wild counterparts!

The only strain identified in the UK is the Seoul strain, which affects the kidneys and has a fatality rate of about 1%. The Seoul strain is not transmissible human-human.

Pet rats may carry hantavirus, and so precautions should always be taken as with any live animal.

And just like that the babies have turned into proper little rats! It’s almost time to start thinking about weaning them and letting the grow independent from their mums.

You may have noticed there is one less kitten in the BBA/agouti litter. Very gutted to admit that I had to euthanise one of the two blue agouti does at about 3 weeks old due to what I believe to be a potentially genetic neurological condition. The sire of the litter is a fantastic rat but I will not be breeding him again. As this only leaves me with the one doe in the litter I will be bringing forward mating my older BBA does (from winter 2025 litters) for hopefully May kittens and using a different stud buck.

First Scottish show done and dusted, and what a day it was! Super busy day with 82 in varieties and 66 in pets. We even had the Daily Record popping 🙈

Here are the team’s results:

Beeghos Banshee
- Best Black
- Best Self
- ⭐️ Reserve Best In Show ⭐️

Beeghos Berry Thirsty
- Best Agouti
- Best AOV
- 3rd Supreme Challenge

Beeghos Coconut Creamer
- Best Cream kitten
- 2nd AOV
- 4th Supreme & Best Opposite Age

No wins in pets this time around but that’s ok! They’re not going to get much opportunity to shine this year as my show calendar is looking rather empty due to other commitments. Excited to judge some shows in 2026 👀

All babies and mums are doing fantastic ❤️. The ch*****ne litter is particularly chunky, the rest are more normal sized. The one random ch*****ne amongst the silver fawns doesn’t look like it belongs in there does it. I’ve also gotten super lucky with not one but two (!!!!) ivory dumbo does. We are starting to get the first hints of peepers appearing now so it won’t be long until they break the nests and start causing chaos.

Unfortunately the black doe did not take so no black litter this time around. I worry my stud buck could be too old to get the job done now, he is almost 2 years old and full sibling to my Platinum and Show Champion doe Beeghos Baroness so it would have been really lovely to have one last litter from him since his sister never managed to get pregnant when I tried last year. Oh well, we move onto plan B then!
