Email your MLAs: Don't leave families waiting for holiday meal payments 09/10/2026

UNISON is concerned about proposed amendments tabled at the last minute by the Education Minister to the Education (Holiday Meal Payments) Bill due to be heard in the Assembly on Monday.

UNISON supports this Bill because children entitled to free school meals shouldn't lose that support during school holidays. With so many families already struggling to make ends meet, holiday meal payments make a real difference.

The Bill complements UNISON's campaign for universal free school meals, which would ensure every child has a nutritious meal each day, remove stigma and help families with the cost of living.

Providing support during the holidays is an important step, and we will keep campaigning for provision that reaches every child.

The proposed changes put the implementation timetable in the control of the Minister and the Department. As a result, parents and children would have no guarantees about when, if ever, payments might begin. In response, UNISON and other organisations have signed a public statement calling on all MLAs to reject the amendments tabled by the Education Minister and support the Bill as it currently stands.

Children and families cannot afford to wait. We need legislation that actually delivers support, not a law that leaves families waiting for payments that might never arrive.

UNISON members, and the wider public, can voice their support for holiday meal payments by emailing their MLAs. Online campaign platform Act Now has created a page that allows you to send a message on this issue to all your MLAs which you can access here:

Email your MLAs: Don't leave families waiting for holiday meal payments Paul Givan's proposed amendments could leave families waiting indefinitely for holiday meal payments, even if the Bill becomes law. MLAs vote on Monday 12 October.

HSC workers in Northern Ireland are still waiting for the commitments that have been made on the 3.3% pay uplift for 2026/27 and on the introduction of the Real Living Wage to be implemented. The NHS workforce in England received the 3.3% pay uplift in April and pay parity has once again been broken.

3.3% is not enough, but health and social care workers in Northern Ireland cannot be left behind on pay. Commitments to pay parity and to implement the Real Living Wage must be honoured. Uplifts to your pay are being unacceptably delayed.

UNISON is now consulting members to ask if you would be prepared to take legal industrial action, including strike action, if these delays continue. This is not an industrial action ballot, but responding to this consultation is important to deliver a clear message to the Health Minister and Executive that you will not be left behind on pay.

Plans are underway for UNISON to ballot you for industrial action if the progress needed on your pay is not made swiftly.

๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ The consultation closes at ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฎ๐—ป๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐— ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜† ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿต ๐—ข๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ.

NHS Pay Northern Ireland | UNISON - the public service union 05/10/2026

The Northern Ireland Executive must act now
NHS staff in England have received a 3.3% pay award for 2026/27, in line with Pay Review Body recommendations. This was paid in April 2026.

The NI Executive has not agreed a budget and the 3.3% pay award has not been implemented in Northern Ireland.

The Department of Health has been directed to implement the 3.3% without the 2026/27 budget having been agreed, but approval to do so is needed from the Northern Ireland Executive.

UNISON NI is campaigning to tackle low pay across our health and social care services. Far too many of our members suffer from persistently low pay and we are determined to see that change through demanding that the Real Living Wage be set as the minimum standard across health and social care.

The Real Living Wage is calculated based on the real cost of living by the Living Wage Foundation, with it currently set at ยฃ13.45 per hour.

Following our UNISON campaign, commitments have been made that the HSC will pay the Real Living Wage in 2026/27 and that any uplift required will be backdated to 1st April 2026.

However, there is no clarity as to when in 2026/27 the Real Living Wage will start to be paid, with implementation of the Real Living Wage to be completed at the same time as payment of the overall pay award, which is being unacceptably delayed.
