As the nights draw in, our minds turn to dark deeds carried out under cover of darkness! 😨 Yes, it's nearly time for our Local History meeting, and for September the theme is... Smuggling! βš“πŸ§πŸ‘€
Did you know Kinson was home to the 'king of the smugglers'? Or that the New Forest was once the perfect hiding place for contraband goods? Join Ross for a coffee and a chat about the local area's historical links to the devious and dangerous smuggling trade. β˜•
πŸ“… Tuesday 29 September from 3pm
πŸ““ No need to book, just turn up ☺️

There's a theme to this week's post, I wonder if you can guess what it is? πŸ§πŸ‘€ Yes, it's the time of year when our thoughts turn to bread, pastry, cake, and other gingham-shrouded mysteries. If you're tempted to get your Bake Off on and become Bournemouth's answer to Paul Hollywood, might we recommend one of our fine cookbooks? Avoid smearing chocolate ganache on your iPhone (never a good look) and pay a visit to our Non-Fiction section for inspiration and instruction. 🍰

Also this week: Book Group! Toddler Time! Chess Club! and all the rest. Hope to see you soon! πŸ“

It's the season of crunchy leaves, golden sunlight and getting all the warm knitwear out of storage. πŸ‚ The perfect time of year for settling down with a good book and a warm drink. We've got new fiction, crime, and children's books - plus old favourites, just waiting to be rediscovered.

Calling all future Chess Champions! 🎺 Chess Club is back today at Winton Library between 11.30 and 12.30 PM. It's aimed at children aged 7 to 11, and all abilities are welcome. β™ŸοΈ
(Please note that a parent/guardian should remain in the library during Chess Club, as children should not be left here on their own, even if they are a potential Grand Master πŸ˜†)

Today is Book Club Day UK! πŸŽ‰πŸ“š
It’s time to:
πŸ“– Show your book to the world
πŸ‘‹πŸ½ Celebrate your reading people
πŸ’¬ Start a conversation
🌍 Take your reading into public
πŸ”₯ Join the reading rebellion!

Did you know Winton Library has two book groups? They're currently at capacity, but we can always add keen readers to the waiting list. Send us an email to [email protected] and we'll see what we can do! πŸ“œ
Or maybe you don't need to, because you've started your own Book Club? Share what you’re reading and tag us so we can celebrate with you!

The biggest rebellion starts on a single page.

Did you know it's Roald Dahl Day on 13 September? 🎩🍫🏭
In honour of the splendiferous author and his more-than-20 fantastic children's books, we've got some phizz-whizzing crafts for you this week: make a Wonka door hanger, or recreate Bruce Bogtrotter's scrumdiddlyumptious giant chocolate cake from 'Matilda'! πŸŽ‚πŸ“šπŸ‘§πŸ»
No need to book, just drop in any time between 12 and 18 September to join in!

It's a new week! πŸ“†πŸ“• This month we are celebrating East and South East Asian Heritage Month, and we have a new display of books by or relating to the East Asian diaspora. From Kazuo Ishiguro to Rebecca F. Kuang, via Maria Kondo, it's a great opportunity to read something new. Find out more about the origins of this month-long celebration here: eseaheritagemonth.co.uk
We've also had another delivery of new books which are now proudly displayed on our New Books shelves: why not pop in and check one out? πŸ“š
And finally, as the graphic indicates, we are expecting the return of CHESS CLUB on Saturday. The first rule of Chess Club is... that technically it's Junior Chess Club, but we probably won't turn anyone away who wants to learn! β™ŸοΈπŸ™‚ There's no need to book; the sessions are an hour long and ideal for ages 7-11.

Wondering what's on this week at Winton Library ? Here's a handy Facebook post to tell you! πŸ€“
We're closed on Monday, as we are most Mondays; but it's also a Bank Holiday, so this is a more celebratory closure than usual. Hooray! πŸ₯³
Tuesday marks the beginning of September: schools are back and autumn is on the way! If you find this time of year motivating (in a new pencil case, academic diary, sort of way), maybe try out our Reading Gym? πŸ’ͺ It's the easiest workout of your life: just five minutes of reading per day could help reduce stress and improve your concentration skills! 😲🧠 And to be honest it's not actually a gym, just a comfy armchair and a good selection of shorter reads. So there's much less chance of pulling a muscle. πŸ›‹οΈπŸ“šπŸ˜Š

A very bright new arrival in the library this week - our Mellow Yellow Cello!
πŸŽ΅πŸ’›πŸŸ‘πŸŽ»βπŸŽ»πŸŸ¨πŸ’›πŸŽ΅
BCP Libraries HQ set us the challenge of making a musical instrument to mark The Reading Agency 'Read to the Beat', and when our new picturebook shelf arrived in an enormous box, we knew just what to do with it πŸ˜† The entire thing is made from recycled and recyclable materials, so it's sustainable too... you could say it's a green yellow cello? β™»οΈπŸ“¦
The cello will be 'in residence' here at Winton Library before going on display at Bournemouth with other libraries' musical creations. Catch it before it goes - it's a great photo opportunity for Summer Reading Challenge champions when they've read their sixth book! πŸ“Έ
