A closer look inside HiVE...

Following our project handover update earlier this year, we wanted to share some of the finished spaces inside this impressive new facility in Ebbw Vale.

Designed to support up to 600 learners, HiVE provides state-of-the-art training environments for robotics, advanced manufacturing, digital technologies and engineering.

CMB initially joined the project as the M&E contractor before stepping in as Principal Contractor following ISG’s administration. We are incredibly proud to have helped bring the project to completion and to see the facility now supporting the next generation of STEM talent in Wales.

A warm welcome to our four newest apprentices, Joshua Cozens, Fraser Herbert, Ieuan Buttle and Noah Hamid, who have joined CMB this month to begin their four-year apprenticeships.

Apprenticeships have always played a central role in CMB’s success. Our long-standing ‘train and retain’ approach allows us to develop skilled professionals while creating lasting career opportunities within the business.

Over the coming years, Joshua, Fraser, Ieuan and Noah will combine classroom learning with valuable hands-on experience. They will spend two days each week working in CMB’s Cardiff Academy, with the remainder of their time split between college and our live project sites.

CMB Director, Rob Borley added: "As CMB’s first apprentice 29 years ago, it’s incredibly rewarding to see the next generation starting out in their careers. CMB are proud to continue supporting, training, and investing in the future talent that will shape our industry."

We’re delighted to have them on board and look forward to supporting them as they begin their careers with CMB.

After 26 years of dedicated service, we are saying farewell to one of the biggest characters in CMB’s Cardiff office, as Jayne Hounsell begins her well-deserved retirement as of last week.

Jayne has always brought personality, energy and laughter to CMB. Whether it was a birthday, a special occasion or simply a day worth celebrating, you could usually count on hearing a carefully chosen song playing from her phone somewhere around the office.

Known for her honesty, warmth and sense of humour, Jayne has always been someone you could rely on to be herself. Her straightforward nature and genuine personality have made her a highly valued colleague and an important part of life at CMB.

Over more than two and a half decades at CMB, Jayne has shown tremendous commitment and resilience. Her positive outlook, determination and ability to keep moving forward have earned the respect of everyone who has worked alongside her.

Jayne’s retirement will leave a considerable gap in the finance department here at CMB. She is truly one of a kind, and her experience, personality and sense of fun will be greatly missed across the business.

On behalf of everyone at CMB Engineering, we would like to thank Jayne for her many years of service and wish her a very happy and fulfilling retirement.

Following almost two years as Principal Contractor on the largest single-campus educational facility in Wales, BESL is now approaching the full handover of Fairwater Community Campus.

The occupation of the final two schools is scheduled to take place with BESL moving off site from today (Friday 28th August). School staff will occupy the buildings from Tuesday 1st September, with Cantonian pupils phased to return from Wednesday 2nd September and Riverbank and Woodland pupils phased to return from Monday 7th September. This will support the transition from construction delivery to education delivery.

The main visitor access to all three schools will be from Fairwater Road, with pupil access for Cantonian being from the south footpath of Doyle Avenue or from Fairwater Road. Pupil transport for Riverbank and Woodlands will be accessible via Doyle Avenue.

Fairwater Community Campus has marked an unforgettable chapter in our company’s history. It has been a privilege to deliver such an important development, and we look forward to seeing the campus serve pupils, families and the wider community for generations to come.

The finish line is in sight at Fairwater Community Campus!

Riverbank and Woodlands are now 99% complete, with only final internal snagging works remaining. Externally, works continue to progress from north to south, and the new drop-off loop is really starting to take shape.

The ‘Pontio’ Careers Hub is also complete, with final snagging underway ahead of handover.

It’s fantastic to see the campus nearing completion, and we’re looking forward to handing it over to Cardiff Council, ready to welcome students into their new learning environment this September.

Earlier this year, CMB was appointed to transform the ageing training facility at the Vale Resort, with the entire refurbishment to be completed in just six weeks – a quick turnaround so that it was ready for the Cardiff City Football Club players on their pre-season return.

The project centred on creating a brighter, more open and modern environment for the players and staff to benefit from. The entire building was redecorated and rebranded throughout, giving the training complex a fresh, vibrant and contemporary feel. Multiple internal walls were removed to double the size of the gym, while a new anti-slip cushioned floor was installed alongside a new sauna and a comfortable player lounge. We also created a dedicated team analysis theatre and significantly expanded the medical facilities.

When the players returned, they were genuinely impressed by the scale of the transformation and the amount that had been achieved within such a short timeframe. With our long-standing ties to Cardiff City FC, this project was about far more than delivering another successful refurbishment – it was one that carried real pride for everyone involved.

Special thanks go to the CMB site team, led by Jimmy Borley, and our subcontractors for delivering such an outstanding transformation. We’d also like to recognise Morgans Consult, CCFC’s club partner, for overseeing the branding throughout the facility.

We hope the new and improved facilities provide the players with everything they need for a successful return to the Championship.

We’re proud to share that CMB has once again been recognised in the Wales Business Insider Top 100 Owner-Managed Businesses for 2026.

This marks our third consecutive year on the list – and our highest ranking to date. Having placed 55th in 2024 and 44th in 2025, we’re delighted to have climbed to 23rd place in 2026.

This continued progress is a fantastic reflection of the hard work, commitment and ambition of everyone at CMB, as well as the ongoing support from our customers and partners.

As an owner-managed business, this recognition also reflects the journey that began when Steve Borley founded the company in 1992. It comes in a particularly memorable year for Steve, who was recently awarded an OBE for his services to the Welsh economy through Engineering, Construction and Sports Participation.

From our beginnings in 1992 to 23rd place in this year’s Top 100, we’re incredibly proud of how far CMB has come and excited to keep building on that momentum.

Supporting grassroots sport and creating opportunities within our local communities has always been a priority at CMB Engineering.

When discussions first began about creating Llanrumney United Women, our Managing Director, Steve Borley, was keen to get involved. Alongside becoming the club’s main sponsor, we provided marketing and creative support before the team was established, helping to launch its first-ever player recruitment campaign.

Just two years later, the club has secured back-to-back promotions and reached the Adran South, achieving its original five-year plan in only two seasons.

It has been fantastic to watch manager and former Cardiff City FC player Catherine Walsh, along with the players, coaches and volunteers, build something truly special. Their ambition, commitment and hard work have been rewarded every step of the way, and we are proud to have played a part in the club’s journey from day one.

But the journey is far from over. With their sights now set on establishing themselves in the Adran South and continuing their rise towards the Adran Premier (the highest level of women’s football in Wales) we have every confidence that they will continue turning ambition into achievement.

Congratulations to everyone involved. This is far more than an ordinary corporate sponsorship; it is a partnership we are genuinely proud to be part of, and we are excited to watch Llanrumney United Women write the next chapter of an already incredible story.
