🌍 European Day of Languages – 26 September 2026

Every year on 26 September, Europe celebrates the European Day of Languages, established in 2001 at the joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Commission. https://edl.ecml.at/en/

The day celebrates the rich diversity of languages and encourages people of all ages to discover and learn languages, whether through formal education or alongside it.

With around 700 million citizens across the Council of Europe’s 46 member states, languages play an important role in bringing people together. Linguistic diversity is a powerful means of fostering intercultural understanding and is a fundamental part of Europe’s rich cultural heritage. 🌍❀️

✍️ And this year, there are even more words to celebrate!
ALL European Day of Languages Writing Competition 2026

As part of the UK Year of Reading, this year’s competition encourages young people to explore the impact and power of writing a personal message to someone else.
πŸ’¬ The theme is: β€œA few words that mean so much”

The competition is open to anyone of school age, anywhere in the UK, writing in any language.

What are the few words that mean so much to you? Who would you write them to? And which language would you choose?

πŸ“ Entries must be submitted by post.
