Not a bad way to round off the week…

13 screw piles. Two days. One 32m temporary bridge.

At Bedford Lock on the River Great Ouse, RADIX worked alongside Beaver Bridges to provide the foundations for a temporary access bridge capable of supporting vehicle loads of up to 44 tonnes.

With saturated ground, high groundwater levels, mature trees and a public riverside setting to contend with, this wasn’t a straightforward installation.

Our team installed 13 extendable 89mm screw piles, with additional helical sections helping achieve the required performance in the challenging ground conditions.

The foundations were completed in just two days, ready for the bridge to be lifted into position.

And when the works are finished? The screw piles can be removed, leaving no permanent foundations behind.

A good example of what screw piles can do when temporary access, challenging ground and a sensitive site all come together.

Most ground mounted solar projects buy their foundations from one supplier and their racking from another, then find out on site whether the two agree with each other.

RADIX supplies both.

Ground screw foundations and the SolarMount racking system are engineered to work together, so the array is designed as one structure rather than assembled from two.

SolarMount is UK manufactured, corrosion resistant and carries a 25 year warranty. Paired with screw foundations it installs across sloping, soft and uneven ground without cut and fill earthworks, goes in year round because nothing has to cure, and comes fully removable at the end of the array's life, which matters both for planning and for what happens to the land afterwards.

Design, ground testing, foundations, racking and installation, from one team.

At Trefawr Farm in the Brecon valleys, an exposed hillside, rocky ground and an operational sheep farm all shaped the foundation design for a new community solar array.

Working with Vital Energi, RADIX designed, supplied, installed and tested 360 ground screw foundations. Pre-installation pull testing confirmed the system could achieve the required minimum uplift resistance of 15kN per foundation, a key requirement for a site exposed to significant wind loading.

Using compact installation equipment, our team completed all 360 foundations in nine days, with minimal disruption to the surrounding farmland and livestock.

What does RADIX actually do?

It is a fair question, and the answer tends to depend on where you meet us. Some people know us as a manufacturer and stockist. Others as the design and testing team on a solar scheme, or as the installer on a BESS site.

Core Foundations is a new brochure that puts all of it in one place: the engineering thinking behind the systems, the capability across solar, battery storage, infrastructure, modular and residential, and the projects that back it up.

Worth a read if you are specifying foundations, or if you have only ever seen one part of what we do.

On a lot of ground screw sites, the installation record is still a number written on a clipboard. The RADIX 8000 PTM was built to replace it.

A fully wireless precision torque monitor, developed with Datum Electronics, rated to 8,000 Nm and designed for real site conditions rather than a workshop bench.

Torque, RPM, insertion angle and depth are captured live and sent straight to a phone or tablet, logged automatically against every pile, then exported for client sign off and compliance. No transcription, no missing records, and a complete installation history from the first screw to the last.

Available as a standalone unit or as part of a RADIX starter package.

Less concrete means less carbon.

Ground screw foundations produce less than half the embodied carbon of an equivalent concrete foundation, with a design life exceeding 76 years in typical soil conditions.

No excavation also means no spoil to remove and no ground to reinstate, so the environmental saving continues well beyond the install itself.

One of the simplest ways construction can lower its footprint.

08/09/2026

38 screw piles. Loads ranging from 18 kN to 53.4 kN. And a foundation layout that had to work around the architecture, not dictate it.

For Watertower House in East Sussex, RADIX worked alongside RX Architects to develop a bespoke foundation solution for this contemporary home.

RDX 89mm extendable screw piles were installed to an average depth of 3.5m, supporting a steel grillage and suspended timber floor system. With loads varying considerably across the building footprint, each pile position responded to the structural demands above.

Static load testing and recorded installation data provided verification of the finished system, while the screw pile approach helped minimise excavation and disruption within the wooded setting.

A good example of what happens when foundation engineering is coordinated with the design from the outset.

Friday feeling at RADIX HQ!

After Team Building last weekend and another busy week of sustainable foundations, this weekend, we're making absolutely no concrete plans... 😎

See what we did there? 😂

Have a great weekend everyone!

August was another busy month across RADIX, with new projects, new thinking and plenty to celebrate.

In our latest monthly round-up, we look back at some of the highlights, including the launch of our new Core Foundations brochure, our latest solar foundation projects and why proper ground testing matters when specifying ground screws for solar farms.

We also explore the benefits of reversible foundations and celebrate RADIX-sponsored boxer Sam Hickey’s brilliant seventh-round knockout in Dublin.
