Three Marys
Neighbourhood cocktail bar by The Shore of Leith celebrating its Three Marys
Come on down to Henderson St and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere with classic cocktails and local Leith beers! The story of our Three Marys
Mary Magdalene
Legend has it that the Leith persevere crest is not the previously assumed Mary and Jesus,
but is in fact Mary Magdalene, and the child of Christ. The speculation is that the child married into
the ruling house of France, that’s if the tail is to be believed, but we'll let you decide
Mary of Guise
Mary Queen of Scots mother had a strong connection to Leith. If you look out our back room, that whole area down to the water is where she held court. A French connection to Leith is precedent again due to her regency’s occupation of Leith from 1548-1560. Mary Queen of Scots
Probably the most famous (in Scotland anyway), this fiery redhead rocked up to The Shore from France on the 19th August 1561, just 18, and changed the course of history. If the stories are to be believed, all of this happened with being the direct descendent of that little baby on the persevere crest.

This is one of our Three Marys - Mary Queen of Guise. She was a French noblewoman who married James V of Scotland and became Queen of Scotland. She was also the mother of our third Mary - Mary, Queen of Scots.
Mary Queen of Guise also had a very real connection with Leith. She had residences here and Leith became hugely important during her regency, particularly because of the French troops stationed in the town.
Tradition places one of her houses around The Shore/Paunch Market area, later associated with Queen Street. Another residence was associated with what became Water Street. Her coat of arms from a Leith property actually survived and was preserved at South Leith Parish Church.
So we are now only a stones throw away from Three Marys. In 1560, Leith was besieged. Mary of Guise was supporting the French-held town while Protestant Scottish forces, backed by an English army, attacked it.
She died in Edinburgh during the siege in June 1560.
Here is when our deliberately ridiculous Three Marys conspiracy can resume:
If you believe the first legend - that Mary Magdalene’s descendants became intertwined with the royal families of France - then along comes Mary of Giuse, a powerful French noblewoman, establishing herself in Leith, the supposed old Templar/Magdalene port.
Coincidence?
Almost certainly.
But we’re in a pub, so obviously not.
The second image is the residence of Mary of Guise, now gone.
