Today at Balgreen Library, we'll be doing summer crafts! This week's activity is making origami animals! Butterflies! Jumping frogs! Even boats!

All ages are welcome, though children will need to bring an adult to accompany them.

The summer crafts will be from 3pm to 4pm, we'll see you then!

Summer seems well and truly here, what a scorcher it's been today! Starting next week, here's our activities schedule for the summer holidays. All activities are free and no booking is necessary! We look forward to seeing you over the upcoming summer weeks!

The Summer Reading Challenge is here!!!

For children 4-11 (although younger/older kids are more than welcome to participate), the Summer Reading Challenge is completely free and runs all the way through the Summer holidays till the end of August.

How it works...
1. Sign up:
Visit your local library and ask to sign up – a librarian will give you a special collector folder when you start your Challenge.
2. Read books:
Set a reading goal and read anything you like from our library..
3. Earn rewards:
Each time you finish a book, visit the library. You will collect special stickers and rewards for reading books!

Looking for a fun and free activity to do with the little ones this Saturday morning? Well look no further than Lego Club! From 11 a.m-midday, all are welcome to come make their best lego creations. All you need to do is to bring an adult, and be between the ages of 5-12! We'll see you there!

Bookbug is back for more songs, stories and rhymes. If you have a child between the ages of 0 to 5 years old, come along! Our next session is tomorrow at 10:30 a.m until 11 a.m.

With The Women's Prize for Fiction Shortlist 2026 now released and the winner soon to be revealed on the 11th of June, we here at Balgreen Library wanted to spotlight some of the previous year's winners and nominees. National Year of Reading 2026 | National Literacy Trust The National Year of Reading 2026 is the biggest campaign in a generation designed to help more people (re)discover the joy of reading and make it part of their everyday lives.

Retired police officer Gerard McEwan will be speaking on The Memorial Roll, information about the Edinburgh Police service and those who lost their lives during World War II.
There is no need to book ahead and it is free to attend.

The books, with further details than those included in the lecture, form part of our Local History collection. Access this collection in the library and other resources online with your library card. You can also come and check out the exhibition boards from the ELB Police Historical Society for all of February.
