The biggest mistake with AI? Forcing it into places it doesn't belong.
Because of the hype, so many businesses feel pressured to adopt AI out of fear of getting left behind. However, this just results in implementing complex tools for problems that don't actually exist in their workflow.
As Ian puts it, stop looking for ways to use AI. Instead, find a genuine operational pain point (a task that takes way too long, a manual process your team dreads, or a resource bottleneck) and use AI to solve that.
Fix the problem, don't just follow the trend.

Think a strict company policy is keeping unapproved AI out of your workplace? Think again.
Recent NCSC data reveals that 71% of employees are already using unapproved AI tools to get their daily tasks done.
The reality is simple - if a tool saves an employee significant time, blocking access on their work laptop just drives the practice onto personal devices. That leaves your sensitive business data, client details and internal documents floating around in consumer AI tools with zero visibility or control.
Instead of treating Shadow AI as a disciplinary issue, the NCSC advises taking a transparent approach. Find out what your team is using, set clear rules on what data is off-limits, and provide a safe, sanctioned tool that actually does the job.

AI has massive potential to save your team hours, but without a clear focus, it’s easy to fall down a rabbit hole.
Ian's trick to getting actual ROI isn't trying to use AI for everything, it’s about targeting the areas that will benefit most from it.
Pick the repetitive, time-consuming tasks your team dislikes doing or the processes that chew up unnecessary resources and then work backwards to see how AI can solve that specific headache.
When you focus on the outcome first, AI shifts from being a shiny distraction to a genuine productivity booster.

Are you one of the 350,000?
Around 350,000 UK business premises are still relying on legacy copper phone lines.
And from 31 January 2027, those businesses face disconnection.
It’s not just your phones either.
Card machines.
Alarm systems.
Lift emergency phones.
Door entry systems.
Fire panel diallers.
Consumers will have a temporary fallback service.
Businesses won’t.
If you’re still relying on an old line somewhere in your business, now is the time to find it.
We can audit what you’ve got, work out what needs moving and get you switched across without a gap in service.

PSTN switch-off: no fallback for business lines | Cobalt 45% of UK landline users are still unclear on the 2027 PSTN switch-off. Consumer lines get a temporary emergency voice service. Business lines do not, and around 350,000 are still on copper.
If you think turning on Multi-Factor Authentication means your business is bulletproof, it’s time to rethink your strategy.
As Ian explains, while MFA is a critical baseline, modern cyber threats have evolved to bypass it. Technical controls are essential, but the most powerful asset in your security strategy is human awareness - shifting your mindset from 'if' to 'when'.
Building multiple layers of defense is crucial, but knowing how your team and your IT partner respond when a threat tests those boundaries is what truly makes the difference.
That’s where good support stops, and great support steps in.

Getting cyber secure doesn't have to be complex or overwhelming.
While no company is entirely immune to online threats, protecting your sensitive business data should feel straightforward, not stressful.
That’s why Cyber Essentials exists. It’s an official certification designed to block up to 80% of everyday cyber risks. At Cobalt, we go beyond basic compliance to ensure your setup isn't just certified, but genuinely secure and easy to manage.

It'll come as no surprise that AI has easily been the biggest shift in cybersecurity over the last year.
It lets us automate tasks, solve problems faster and work more efficiently. But as Ian points out, AI doesn't inherently understand intent, it just executes instructions. Ask it to perform a task wrapped in the right prompt and it will do it without realising whether it's helping a legitimate user or facilitating a breach.
While AI is an incredible assistant, robust human oversight and smart security policies are still essential to keep your network safe.
What happens when you put the team on the spot with a bunch of good old 'would you rathers'?
Safe to say, we learned a lot. Maybe don't start a boy band though.
Thanks Jake, Ash and Tommy for being great sports as always.

Analogue lines are being retired, shifting all landlines and connected systems to digital IP-based networks.
It’s not just desktop office phones that are affected. Anything connected to an analogue line (including lift emergency phones, security alarms, door entry systems and card payment terminals) will stop working if it isn't upgraded.
Waiting until the last minute risks disruption, lost connectivity and higher migration costs as demand surges.
We’ve put together a clear breakdown of what’s changing and the key steps to take now to keep your business running seamlessly.
