Give a real answer.
“How are you?” “Fine, thanks.” We say it without thinking, even when it isn’t quite true.
Today, choose one person you trust and tell them how you actually are. Tired. A bit low. Better than last week. Not sure. You don’t have to explain everything, and they don’t have to fix it.
And if someone gives you a real answer, “thank you for telling me” goes a long way.
Who’s someone you can be honest with?
If today feels heavy, you don’t have to carry it alone.

Look up for one minute.
So much of the day is spent looking down: at screens, pavements and to-do lists. Wherever you are right now, try looking up for one minute.
Notice a tree and how it moves. The colour of the sky right now. The light caught in a puddle.
You don’t have to feel anything in particular. It’s just a minute that’s yours.
What did you notice?
If today feels heavy, you don’t have to carry it alone.

Say thank you.
Gratitude is one of the simplest things we can practise, and it does more than we might expect. A 2023 review brought together 64 studies of gratitude, from keeping a gratitude diary to thanking someone in person or in writing. People who practised it reported better mental health, more satisfaction with life, and fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression.*
It doesn’t replace other support, but it costs nothing and you can start today.
Think of someone who helped you and never really heard it. A teacher who believed in you. A friend who turned up. A stranger who stopped when you needed a hand. Send them a few lines. It doesn’t need to be perfect, and it’s rarely too late.
Or, before you sleep tonight, note down three things you’re grateful for. Small counts: a warm drink, a kind word, a bit of sunshine.
Who would you thank today?

Talk to a stranger.
Most of us assume it’ll be awkward. That they’d rather be left alone. That we’ll say the wrong thing.
In one study, people struck up a conversation with a stranger every day for a week. Of 1,336 conversations, 87% happened with the very first person they approached, and their worries eased a little more each day.*
It doesn’t need to be deep. A comment in the queue. “That looks good” at the café counter. A proper hello to the neighbour you usually just nod to.
Who’s the last stranger you had a nice chat with?
If today feels heavy, you don’t have to carry it alone.
