Spiking | A criminal offence

Freshers weeks should be remembered for the right reasons. Spiking, in any form, is dangerous, unacceptable and could lead to serious criminal consequences.

Confirmed cases of spiking are rare in Devon and Cornwall, but if you’re out and about for the first time and think you have been spiked, tell a trusted friend or a member of staff immediately. If you’re in immediate danger call 999. Report it to the police once you are safe.

Spiking in any form is a criminal offence; there are serious consequences for anyone who does it. Harming someone by spiking them could lead to a jail sentence between 10 years and life.

Remember this: putting extra alcohol into someone's drink without them knowing, even if you know them and think it’s for fun, is still spiking, and can be very dangerous. It will be treated by the police with the same severity as any other sort of spiking. Don’t be that person.

Today we held the free bike marking event at Exwick Parish Hall that we posted about a earlier on.

Members of the public were able to register their bikes on a national database free of charge. Each bike was fitted with a unique QR code and the corresponding bike details were uploaded to Bike Register’s database. The aim of this scheme is to detect the theft of pushbikes nationally. This method makes it easier for us to recover lost and stolen bikes, allowing us to reunite them with their rightful owner. Although this scheme is great when it comes to recovering bikes, remember to keep your bikes safe and lock them up securely when left unattended.

E-bikes | Be wary of what you buy

An e-bike can be a great way to get around uni, but if you’re buying it second hand, make sure to keep an eye out for illegal modifications.

Anyone over the age of 14 can ride an electrically assisted pedal cycle (EAPC - see the rules at the link below) on the road or cycle path. We recommend wearing a helmet, and staying off the pavement.

But it can be very dangerous if illegal modifications have been made, for instance by removing the pedals from the drive train and having a throttle or a motor that assists over 15.5mph, then it is classed as an e-motorbike.

To ride an e-motorbike legally, you need a valid licence, insurance, tax, registration and you must wear a motorcycle helmet.

Be wary of what you are buying, and from whom. Save your money.

This is because:

- Evidence collected at home may not be accepted in court
- Self swabbing does not capture injuries, clothing fibres or other crucial evidence

However, if you have already used a self swabbing kit, please visit your local Sexual Assault Referral Centre or SARC or report to police for assistance.

E-motorcycles | NOT an e-bike

Thinking about buying an e-bike to get around uni?

Be careful. Some bikes advertised online as ‘e-bikes’ are actually electric motorbikes.

Electrically powered two wheelers that don’t have pedals to propel them or have a twist grip throttle or that provide motorised assistance above 15.5mph are classed as motorbikes.

You can’t ride them on the road without a valid licence, insurance, tax, registration and you must wear a motorcycle helmet which conforms to British safety regulations.

Police can, and have in Devon & Cornwall, seize illegally ridden e-motorbikes and crush them.

Consider all this before buying one, wherever you are buying it from. Some advertisers will describe it as an e-bike. It is not.
