Save the date. The English Touring Opera return to Exeter Library on Sunday 15 November with Mimi and the Golden Touch, a brand-new relaxed theatre show made for SEN and neurodiverse children and their families 🎭💛

Co-created with students at Briarwood School in Bristol, Mimi and the Golden Touch retells the Greek myth of King Midas, and explores friendship, belonging and the power of being yourself. The show runs from 3pm to around 4pm in the Children's Library, and everyone is welcome.

From 9am to 10am, the Children's Library at Exeter Library sets aside time for families and children with SEND to enjoy the sensory zone.

Bring your child along at any point in the hour and explore in your own time. Sensory bags and books will be out giving you plenty of ways to play and learn together in a relaxed, supportive space.

The session is free and drop-in.

Devon author and illustrator Tom McLaughlin comes to Exeter Library on Monday 26 October for a children's event featuring Alan, King of the Universe, an orange cat with opposable thumbs and a plan to rule the world 🐈

Tom will talk about how the series came together and show your child how to draw Alan's characters and create their own comic strip. Formerly a political cartoonist and animation designer, his books are now translated into more than ten languages. The event runs for up to 60 minutes in the Rougemont Room, with The Bookery, Crediton's independent bookshop, in the foyer and Tom signing books afterwards.

What makes a great children's story? How do you write books that entertain, inspire and keep young readers turning the page? 🤔

Join three South West children's authors (Peta Hands, Chris McGuire and Tim Gambrell) for an engaging evening exploring the craft of writing for children. From laugh-out-loud adventures and reluctant readers to imaginative storytelling and creating memorable characters, each author will share their unique approach to writing for kids... pick up some hints & inspiration

Exeter Unesco City of Literature, Raw Writing, Candy Jar Books

Matt Bryden, Louisa Adjoa Parker and Rebecca Tantony join us at Exeter Library on 8 October for The Best Advice, our Royal Literary Fund panel 😊

Matt's poetry has won the Templar Pamphlet Prize and a Literature Matters Award from the Royal Society of Literature. Louisa writes fiction and poetry drawing on her Ghanaian and English heritage, and speaks widely on Black history in the South West. Rebecca has performed at the Royal Albert Hall and Southbank Centre, and her work has been commissioned by BBC Radio 4.

Bricks & Booze is back at Exeter Library 🥳

On the last Wednesday of each month, we're opening the Library after hours for an evening of LEGO® , music and good company. We'll bring out our huge collection of LEGO® while you bring your own refreshments and snacks.

This is your chance to ditch the kids, throw off the shackles of work, have fun, get silly, socialise and play around with some little colourful bricks. Come along by yourself, with friends, or make it the perfect (and affordable) date night.

It's not exactly LEGO® Masters... but we do sometimes give out prizes!

Tickets are £3 per person, with all proceeds supporting our brilliant Library service. There is no booking fee if you purchase your ticket in the Library, and tickets will also be available on the door (subject to availability).

Please bring your own refreshments. We'll provide paper cups.

Access: The event takes place on the first floor of Exeter Library, which is fully wheelchair accessible. Toilets are located on the second floor and can be accessed by lift or stairs.

Please note: Although the name Bricks & Booze is a fun, slightly gimmicky idea, we don't want the evening to be focused solely around alcohol and nobody should feel pressured to drink. Feel free to bring soft drinks, snacks or whatever you enjoy, and have an equally brilliant sober build.

🌿 Rougemont Gardens Gardening Group 🌿

Fancy getting your hands dirty and giving Rougemont Gardens a little TLC? Join a friendly gardening group (led by Councillors in the St David ward) for a few hours of litter picking, weeding, pruning and, as the season goes on, mulching and planting 🌱

📅 11 October, 2–3pm

Bring strong gardening gloves and a hand trowel or fork if you have them - but don’t worry if you don’t, as tools and gloves can be provided.
