Increase Security by Using Passkeys
Passwords are no longer as secure as other options. Websites and apps now support more secure passkeys to log in. These passkeys are tied to the device they have been saved on. Windows 11 can store your passkeys or use those stored on other devices such as your smartphone and take advantage of authentication via PIN, facial recognition, or fingerprint.

Ensure backup protection
Do not risk data loss. Hardware will fail. Files get corrupted. Viruses can wreak havoc. Make sure data is properly backed up.
Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox are cloud storage solutions and not backups. The stored files have no backup unless this is specifically configured. This means different versions are not stored, and corruption or virus incursion will impact the files in both PC and cloud storage.
Robust distinct backups are recommended. OrbitTech advise the use of third-party backup solutions that offer full restore capabilities and longer retention and interval number periods. This provides proper protection.
Backup solutions also provide:
- full file versions and history,
- automatic synchronisation of file changes,
- simultaneous multi-device backup and access,
- local external drive compatibility providing additional protection and redundancy.
Contact OrbitTech to discuss your automated cloud backups.

Implement Text Expanders/Autocorrect Shortcuts
Do you often type the same phrases, email addresses, or common responses?
Text expanders (available as separate apps or included as standard in some operating systems/keyboards) allow creation of short abbreviations that automatically expand into longer text. For example, typing “eml” could automatically transform into your full email address. Some native systems even enable this without any user interaction.
This is a game-changer for repetitive typing tasks.

Fake-call detection feature released by Android.
Google unveiled a fake-call detection tool that notifies when to hang up because the friend or family member you’re hearing isn’t actually on the line.
The feature creates a channel between your phone and the Android device of the contact being impersonated, allowing the contact’s device to send an end‑to‑end encrypted confirmation that proves the call really originated from them rather than a spoofed number. It only works with Android systems and the Phone by Google app.

Protect your mobile device.
Mobile phone theft is rising across the UK particularly in London. Apparently thieves are paid an agreed amount and the device is rapidly transferred to a fencing centre in China. Applying the tips below should help in restricting the value to that of the hardware only, if you become an unfortunate victim.
- Enable biometrics for phone and apps with sensitive data access
- Set up remote tracking on another device to be able to locate and delete all data.
- Review and enable phone specific additional security protections as not all are switched on by default. 'Stolen mode' can be considered for remote activation that, for example, sets screen brightness to zero, takes images from all cameras and locks the screen.
- Consider requiring biometrics to enable Control Centre and Airplane mode in order to prevent thief from disabling remote access.
- Reduce idle screen lock activation time to a minimum, say 30 seconds, for the same reason
Also remember insurance and police reports will require the device IMEI number so be sure to record it in a safe place. Available in Settings and by dialing * #06 #

PC Shutdown and Restart - the differences
Many people do not realise there are significant differences between the two functions:-
Shutdown is the process of turning off a computer or device completely. It creates a deep hibernation file that the PC later leverages to allow a faster Startup. This is useful to conserve energy, protect hardware or intend to leave the PC idle for an extended period.
Restart, also known as a Soft Reboot, is the process of closing down all software applications, background processes and operating system followed by a full restart of the operating system. During this sequence important updates can be automatically installed. Restarting also fixes minor software issues and clears temporary files resulting in improved performance and stability.
In summary Shutdown does just that without updates, Restarts include activities that maintain PC health and should be initiated on a regular basis.

New scam targeting iPhone users.
The scam is simple: a text that appears to come from Apple alerts you to Apple Pay fraud and gives a number to call to stop the transaction. “Experts say the scam relies on urgency, impersonation, and convincing personal details.” Calling connects to a criminal who may pose as Apple, law enforcement, a bank, or a card issuer. The calls and numbers are fake.
Apple warns scammers may claim they’ll help reverse “unauthorised charges using Apple Pay” and then link to a fake website to steal credentials. Apple adds it "will never ask you to log in to any website, or to tap Accept in the two-factor authentication dialogue, or to provide your password, device passcode or two-factor authentication code, or to enter it into any website.”
This isn’t limited to Apple, Microsoft, Google and other big tech users face similar schemes. The companies say they do not send unsolicited texts asking you to call support or give sensitive information.
Be careful out there!

Phishing scams
Phishing attempts pose a significant risk to businesses by camouflaging harmful emails as authentic messages. This tactic aims to trick individuals into revealing sensitive data or downloading malware with the same intent.
These fraudulent emails often imitate legitimate communications from well-known and trusted organisations, making it simpler for attackers to mislead recipients. To avoid being a victim it is essential to confirm the legitimacy of unexpected emails and remain vigilant for indications of phishing, like suspicious URLs, unfamiliar senders, or solicitations for personal details.
