Giving men A BETTER CHANCE of beating Prostate Cancer About our Charity

The Prostate Project is a rapidly growing charity run by volunteers.

In the past 20 years we have raised over £8 million and helped the Royal Surrey County Hospital achieve ‘Centre of Excellence’ status in the treatment of prostate cancer. We support the Royal Surrey County Hospital, St Luke’s Cancer Centre and Frimley Park Hospital in their efforts to detect and treat prostate cancer. We have provided equipment, specialist nursing staff and run an active patient support group. We pride ourselves in having administration costs of less than 5% – far below the average 20% lost to administration by most UK charities

In 2011, the Royal Surrey County Hospital asked us if we could raise £1.3m towards a new landmark Urology Centre. In 2013 they increased that figure to £2m. Thanks to the incredible support, we exceeded that amount and are now equal funding partners with the hospital having raised almost £3m. The Stokes Centre for Urology is now one of the leading Centres in the country, receiving referrals from around the world. Our research initiative, launched in 2006 at the University of Surrey, has grown to become the largest charity-funded prostate cancer research group in the UK. Currently 25 strong, the Prostate Project research team are producing results of international importance including the development of antibodies against targets on the surface of prostate cancers, the development of vaccines from the patient’s own immune cells and the use of a potential new marker (EN2) in urine to identify the presence of prostate cancer; the first breakthrough in diagnosis since the 30-year-old PSA blood test currently used to detect prostate cancer. They are currently investigating new techniques to identify and treat advanced prostate cancer using immunotherapy. Currently three quarters of men diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer die within five years. These, together with other clinical and research achievements by our hospital based team of consultants, specialist nurses and technicians have been internationally recognized and earned a reputation for excellence in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. One of the elements, pivotal to their continued success, is a state of the art NHS Urology Centre and the funds we are raising will help make this a reality. Much of this work requires expensive clinical and laboratory trials to gain peer recognition and NICE(National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) approval – the ultimate goal. You can help us achieve this. Every contribution, no matter how small, is another step on the road to saving more of the 10,000 lives that are lost every year to prostate cancer. General enquiries:

Jeffrey Archer made emotional cancer plea days before 'sudden' death 08/10/2026

We were very sorry to hear of the passing of Lord Jeffrey Archer this week.
Lord Archer was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2013 and spoke openly about his experience over the years. Just days before his death, he was on BBC Breakfast urging men to have their PSA checked.
We’re grateful to him for continuing to use his voice to raise awareness of prostate cancer right until the end.
Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

What is the prostate?
The prostate is a small gland, about the size of a walnut, found just below the bladder. It’s part of the male reproductive system and helps produce the fluid that makes up semen.
As men get older, the prostate can enlarge and sometimes cause urinary problems. An enlarged prostate isn’t prostate cancer, although some symptoms can be similar.

Thanks to your donations, we’re funding PhD student James Thetford and his research into why prostate cancer affects men differently.
James is looking at the links between ethnicity, the microbiome and prostate cancer, using samples from Black, White and Asian men. This is the first UK study of its kind.
We know that 1 in 4 Black men will develop prostate cancer, compared with 1 in 8 men overall, but we still don’t fully understand why.
James hopes his work will help us understand more about this increased risk and whether differences in the microbiome could play a part.
It’s really interesting research and we’re proud to be funding it.

This Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, our posts have reached over 35,000 accounts. We want more men to know about their risk of prostate cancer, how simple it is to have a PSA blood test, and that finding prostate cancer early can give men a better chance of successful treatment.
And every time you like, comment on or share one of our posts, you help us reach more people.
That share might mean one man finds out he can have a free PSA test in our Man Van.
It might encourage him to get tested.
And it might just save his life.

As Prostate Cancer Awareness Month comes to an end, THANK YOU to everyone who has helped us spread the word.
Please keep talking, sharing and helping us reach more men.

Can you help?

We’re looking for local volunteers to help with the admin that keeps our Man Van on the road. This includes things like booking testing venues, arranging phlebotomists and ordering stock.
We’re also looking for someone with legal experience who could offer advice and guidance when we need it.
We’re looking for people in Guildford or the surrounding area - you just some time to spare and a willingness to help!
