Bringing both familiar and untold stories to life through performance.

📖 More than just beautiful words…

Every sonnet has a story.

Who wrote it? Who—or what—inspired it? What was happening in the writer’s life? And how does knowing that story change the way we hear their words?

In A Sail Through the Sonnets, we won’t simply perform a collection of sonnets. We’ll take you behind the words, sharing some of the lives, loves, inspirations and fascinating stories that surround the writers and their poems.

From familiar names to voices you may be discovering for the first time, we hope you’ll leave hearing these sonnets a little differently.

Come and discover the stories with us. ⛵📖

🎶 Music plays a special part in A Sail Through the Sonnets, helping us journey through the centuries and bringing another dimension to the stories behind the poems.

We’re delighted to be joined by a talented local musician, providing live musical accompaniment throughout the performance — including piano, lute and harpsichord. 🎹

From Shakespeare and Shelley to more modern voices, the music helps set the scene, capture the mood and tell the stories in ways that words alone sometimes can’t.

We can’t wait to share it all with you. ⛵📖🎶

When we think of the great Romantic poets, names like Wordsworth, Keats and Byron often spring to mind…💞

But one of the most passionate and influential voices of the movement was Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822).

Writing in the early 19th century, Shelley believed poetry could change the way we see the world. His sonnets combine powerful emotion with vivid imagery, and continue to inspire readers more than 200 years later.

In A Sail Through the Sonnets, we’ll discover how Shelley used just fourteen lines to capture an idea that still resonates today.

An evening of sonnets, old and new, and the stories behind them. ⛵📖

When someone says “sonnet”, most of us immediately think of Shakespeare… 🪶

And of course, he will be joining us on our journey.

But A Sail Through the Sonnets also explores voices from across the centuries, including the extraordinary American poet Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950) 🌹

A Pulitzer Prize winner, Millay breathed new life into the sonnet, proving that this centuries-old form could still be passionate, fearless, witty and deeply personal.

Who was she? Why did she matter? And what made her sonnets so unforgettable?

Well… you’ll have to come and find out ⛵️ 📖
