We are absolutely thrilled to announce that our Junior Estimator, Dan Heffernan has achieved a 1st Class Honours in his Construction Quantity Surveying Degree Apprenticeship.
On behalf of everyone at Howard Civil Engineering, we want to say how incredibly pleased and proud we are to have supported Dan through this journey. While we are always committed to backing our team's professional development, the credit for this phenomenal milestone belongs entirely to him. Balancing a demanding role with higher education takes immense discipline, and it is his sheer determination, hard work, and sharp eye for detail that got him here.
We are excited to begin working through Dan's new development plan as he continues to grow his career and add massive value to our team.

Critical milestone achieved at Skelton Grange
Our team has successfully advanced a complex section of works involving the installation of a FW Rising Main crossing the River Aire / Leeds-Liverpool Canal, fixed to the existing bridge structure as part of our work in support of a major project at Skelton Grange.
This challenging operation required extensive coordination between the client, designers, specialist contractors, statutory bodies and local stakeholders - all while keeping the canal, live carriageway, footpaths and Trans-Pennine Trail fully operational.
Key elements of the works included:
- Collaboration with the Client and Design Team to develop a solution meeting Yorkshire Water’s requirements for future adoption under a S104 agreement.
- Permitting and coordination with the Canal & River Trust and Environment Agency.
- Specialist water safety training for HCE teams, delivered in conjunction with the Royal Life Saving Society UK.
- Detailed RAMS development and provision of specialist water rescue equipment.
- Management of multiple specialist trades, including traffic management, scaffolding, directional drilling, pipe installation, insulation, protection cage installation and testing.
With the canal remaining open for all users and surrounding roads, footpaths and businesses continuing to operate, careful planning and communication with local stakeholders - including businesses, residents, the rowing club and neighbouring organisations - has been essential throughout the works.
Well done to everyone involved for their outstanding teamwork, technical expertise and collaborative approach in delivering this complex infrastructure solution safely and efficiently.

We’re really pleased to share some lovely feedback about our team’s work at Bankwood Industrial Estate. Terri Potts got in touch to express appreciation for their help.
While our works were underway earlier this month, Terri needed to access one of the businesses on the estate to collect a fence panel. With the road dug up as part of the works, getting to the business proved challenging and initially looked almost impossible.
That’s where our site team really stepped up. They took the time to help, making sure Terri could get through the works safely, and even offered to help carry the fence panel.
Projects like this can inevitably cause some disruption for local businesses and visitors, so it’s great to hear how well the team has handled things on site, keeping communication clear, putting safety first and doing their best to make things as straightforward as possible for everyone.
A huge thank you to everyone on site for the way you represented Howard Civil Engineering, and to Terri for taking the time to share the feedback. It’s a great reminder that how we work with people matters just as much as the work itself. 👏

We are pleased to share that both our Rossington and Skelton Grange sites achieved an exceptional 44 out of 45 in our recent Considerate Constructors Scheme audit!
The assessors praised the site teams for their total commitment to industry best practices, highlighting our strong integration into the local community through local supply chains and modular unit support. Both sites demonstrated outstanding environmental leadership, driven by continuous dust and noise monitoring, plant efficiency tracking, and a clear focus on sustainability.
A massive thank you and congratulations to the entire project team at both sites for this fantastic result - another excellent CCS visit 👏

In July, we were delighted to host Jake for a week of work experience within our Commercial department!
During his time with us, Jake got hands-on insight into key Quantity Surveying responsibilities and joined Ben Pritchard, Commercial Manager at Howard Civil Engineering, for a site visit.
He made such a great impression that we’ve offered him an additional week on-site alongside one of our site engineers to broaden his experience even further.
Great work, Jake!

Tough Mudder conquered! 💪💙
A massive congratulations to our incredible Tough Mudder team!
Our team of 12 took on the 15km Tough Mudder Yorkshire course, tackling more than 20 obstacles along the way. They battled through the mud, conquered the water, powered up the hills and definitely questioned a few life choices along the way – but they absolutely smashed it! 👏
This year’s challenge has been particularly meaningful for everyone at Howard Civil Engineering. Following the sad loss of Andy and Helen Howarth, we wanted to honour their memory by supporting The Howarth Foundation and continuing the incredible work and values they championed throughout their lives.
We couldn’t be prouder of the team’s grit, determination and teamwork, and hugely grateful to everyone who has supported them so far.
There’s still time to help us reach our fundraising goal, and every donation will be personally matched by Howard Civil Engineering, doubling the impact of your contribution.
