PM sets out new path to fix social care together: 29 July 2026 29/07/2026

Social care is about much more than easing pressure on hospitals. It helps people remain independent, live safely in their own homes and stay connected to the people and communities that matter to them.

Following today’s national discussions about the future of social care, Paul Heslop, Head of Social Care at Local Solutions, said:

“The growing national focus on social care is welcome. As a charity that has delivered care across the Liverpool City Region for more than 25 years, we see every day the difference that good, community-based support makes to people’s lives.

“Creating a stronger and more consistent care system will require sustainable, long-term investment. This includes fair pay, meaningful career opportunities for care workers and a much greater focus on prevention and early support.

“What matters most is creating a care system that people can trust, that values its workforce and that provides the right support at the right time, wherever someone lives.”

Today we came together to celebrate some of the incredible people who give their time to support Local Solutions and the communities we work alongside.

It was wonderful to welcome our Carers Centre volunteers, Shopmobility volunteers, Supported Lodgings Householders, Trustees and colleagues for a Volunteers’ Lunch to say a heartfelt thank you.

One of the highlights of the afternoon was hearing from our Chief Executive, Tom Harrison, who shared a lovely reflection on how, as children, many of us couldn’t wait to volunteer at school. Whether it was taking the register, ringing the bell, handing out the books or helping the teacher, we all wanted to play our part and make a difference.

That same spirit doesn’t disappear as we get older. Our volunteers are still those people who step forward, lend a hand, support others and help make their communities stronger. They simply do it in different ways.

Whether it’s supporting unpaid carers, helping people stay connected through Shopmobility, opening your home through Supported Lodgings or giving your time as a Trustee, every act of kindness makes a lasting difference.

To every one of our volunteers, thank you. Your time, compassion and commitment help us empower people and support communities every single day 💜

Earlier recognition for unpaid carers can change lives.

The Government has announced new plans to help unpaid carers get recognised sooner and access the support they need earlier.

At Local Solutions, we know that many people don't realise they're carers. They often say, "I'm just helping my mum," or "I'm just looking after my partner." But if you're regularly supporting someone because of illness, disability, mental health or addiction, you could be an unpaid carer.

That's exactly why we created our Am I a Carer? campaign, to help people recognise their caring role and find the right support as early as possible.

🌡️ It's going to be a hot one today. Take care if you're heading out.

With temperatures expected to be some of the hottest we've seen, here are a few simple reminders to help you stay safe:

💧 Drink plenty of water.

☀️ Try to stay in the shade during the hottest part of the day.

👕 Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and don't forget your sunscreen.

🏠 Keep your home cool by closing curtains during the day and opening windows later this evening.

👵 Check in on older relatives, neighbours or anyone who might struggle in the heat. A quick call or knock at the door could make all the difference.

🐶 Make sure pets have plenty of water and somewhere cool to rest. Never leave them in a parked car.

🌊 Thinking of jumping in a river, lake or dock to cool off? Please don't. Open water can be dangerous, even in hot weather, with cold water shock, strong currents and hidden hazards.

If you want to enjoy the water safely, why not head to Liverpool Watersport Centre (Merseysport)? From paddleboarding and kayaking to supervised open water swimming, there are plenty of ways to cool off safely.

Look after yourself, keep cool and don't forget to look out for others too 💙
