How do scientists and healthcare professionals measure lung health?

One way is through spirometry, a simple but powerful test that measures how much air a person can breathe in and out and how quickly they can do it. It's commonly used to assess respiratory function and support the diagnosis and monitoring of conditions such as asthma and COPD.

At BioGrad Education, students have the opportunity to use spirometers as part of their practical training, helping bring respiratory physiology to life beyond the classroom. By collecting and interpreting real data, students gain a deeper understanding of how the lungs function and how changes in respiratory health can be identified through testing.

Our 16–19 courses offer so much more than just time in the labs and clinics. For many students, it’s their first experience away from home, so we make sure the week is filled with exciting activities, new experiences and plenty of opportunities to make lasting friendships.

We recently welcomed students from the University of Strathclyde to BioGrad Education, where they developed and strengthened a wide range of essential laboratory and biomedical science skills.

During their training, students gained hands-on experience in:
• Laboratory health and safety, COSHH regulations, and risk assessments
• Accurate pipetting techniques and practical experience using a range of pipettes
• Serial dilutions, molarity calculations, and stock solution preparation
• pH measurement and adjustment using calibrated equipment
• PCR workflows, DNA purity analysis using Nanodrop spectrophotometry, and gel electrophoresis
• Aseptic techniques and operation of a Class II Microbiological Safety Cabinet
• Preparation of sterile cell culture media
• Resuscitation and culturing of frozen human and animal cell lines
• Microscopic evaluation of cell morphology and confluence
• Cell counting using both haemocytometers and automated cell counting technology

By combining theory with real laboratory practice, students leave with greater confidence, enhanced technical skills and valuable industry experience to support their future careers in science.

Our 16–19-year-old students love getting stuck into suturing practice on synthetic and porcine skin, giving them the chance to experience what real medical training can feel like. 🩺

From mastering their first stitch to improving their technique throughout the session, students build confidence, develop hands-on skills, and have plenty of fun along the way. It’s all about bringing science to life outside the classroom and giving students an exciting insight into the world of medicine and healthcare.

Due to overwhelming demand, all 2026 A-Level Practical Endorsement dates are now fully booked.

Since releasing our 2027 and 2028 dates, places are already booking up quickly across our Liverpool, Birmingham and London centres for Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
