Also out today - Music Is Invisible (Pentimento Volume Three) by Jon Hassell, on the Ndeya label that we set up with him as a home for his work.
As usual - Boomkat.com get it:
"'Music is Invisible' closes out a trilogy and unlike its two predecessors, it was recorded live in London when Hassell was performing as a trio. The semi-improvised set, comprised of elements from the other Pentimento volumes, turned out to be his final concert so the stems were shuttled over to Rona, who "edited and mixed" the material into a more fitting swan song. Reverberating electric piano chimes lead us into the lengthy 'Blue Ba-Ya', before Hassell's signature brass curlicues emerge alongside hypnotic pads and chugging bass. Soon, the hollowed-out, saturated electronic beats that characterised the other Pentimento records materialise but never overwhelm Hassell's own performance, that's given the spotlight throughout. Hassell's rhythmic experimentation is more present on the eerie 'Club Gris-Gris' and the ace 'Broadway Boogie-Woogie', when he chews up a low-slung jazz loop, pushing it rudely off the grid.
But the record's nexus point is the side-long finale 'Electric Forest'. Anyone familiar with Hassell will know the sound and it's the perfect way to bow out, playing muted trumpet over rubbery, hypnotic beats that slowly mutate into the noisy aether."

Joseph Kamaru - Ke Wapendane (Official Video)
New! And svailable to watch in full now over at YT. Filmed by Simon Nduti for Nduti One Stop, edited by Dom Foster. RIYL: dancing, joy, classic call-and-response chant vocals, drums that make you move, guitars from mars - the rhythm sounds like it’s going through a Mu-Tron Bi-Phase at the start, then there’s some killer lead fuzztone lines buried quite deep in the mix, before it veers off into classic 60s garage band territory towards the end, like a Phil & The Frantics outtake.
What’s this song about? I defer once again to Maina wa Mũtonya, Profesor e investigador, Estudios de África y Diáspora Africana: “The song is advising couples in complicated relationships, to let their partners be; that if you think your significant other has found another one, just move on and love will find you. The song uses an interesting mix of both Gĩkũyũ and Swahili languages, right from the title (Ke Wapendane – “Let them love each other”) to the lyrics themselves.”
Our celebration of the remarkable music of Joseph Kamaru continues, and as it’s Bandcamp Friday, you can enter the code kamaru2026 at checkout for today only, for 40% off any format of Heavy Combination or Further Combinations. Add some amazing benga music to your life, your weekend will be better for it!
Been a quiet year for Disciples, label is a bit on the ropes at the moment for various reasons, but we’ll be back. In the meantime I’m trying to keep other plates spinning. One of these is the release of Jon Hassell’s final ever concert recording, which was/is a pretty jaw-dropping performance, I was stuck behind the merch table on the night but was quietly vibrating in my chair as the music bounced off the stone walls of a church in East London. This part of it sounds like some kind of parallel universe where they were mixing outer limits jazz into the deconstructed bass experiments being blasted out of the speakers at FWD>>. Jon hated attention being focused on his age (the subtext of even a positive late period review being “not bad for an old guy!”) but the sheer consistency of making such incredible music throughout yr career is pretty special. Posthumous records are always a very difficult proposition for obvious reasons, but especially for someone that was so hyper focused on every last detail as Jon was. One thing that helped a lot was the amount of correspondence I had with Jon - some days he would send me 5 or 6 lengthy emails riffing on different topics, a total overload at times, but now a super useful resource to go back through - a mass of working titles, art concepts, thought tangents, inspirations etc. He always wanted to use the title “Broadway Boogie Woogie” for a track as it was a favourite painting of his, and when I started researching other material that had been inspired by it, came across the Mood Mondrian film by Marie Menken from 1965 which just fit perfectly, and which the executors of the Menken estate, The Film-Makers Co-Op in NYC (founded by Stan Brakhage, Jonas Mekas etc) were gracious to licence for this use, connecting the dots between various strands of twentieth century avant-garde art. Marie Menken deserves an essay in her own right but I sadly don’t have the space here. Anyway, Music Is Invisible (Pentimento Volume Three) is out on the Ndeya label on 2 October and it will shred your head.
An unmissable opportunity to catch a musician at the top of their game, a proper out of body experience

HEAVY COMBINATION! In all senses of the term. Last November we held a London launch party for the first career-spanning retrospective of the music of Kenyan benga musician Joseph Kamaru.
Stranger Than Paradise were kind enough to host us. After playing the album back in full, Tash LC interviewed compiler (and Joseph Kamaru’s grandson) KMRU. In these excerpts he talks about the photos used for the cover art, Joseph Kamaru’s super stylish stage clothes, and how despite the music being so joyful and danceable, most of the lyrics explore political corruption, serious social issues, relationship problems, and the challenges of post-colonial life, another reason why the album title is so fitting.
After the conversation, KMRU took to the decks to play a selection of both his grandfather’s music, and other Kenyan music from the period, a brilliant set of benga, funk, and East African rock’n’roll.
Thanks to all of the crew at the great STP, Tash for the insightful and well researced questions, KMRU and everyone that passed through.
Heavy Combination 1966 - 2007 is available now in 2LP, CD and digital editions, and we’ve recently released a companion mini-LP, Further Combinations, showcasing five more gems from the Kamaru archives.

The Duchess of drone, the Marchioness of minimalism, the Viceroy of vertical harmony, the Empress of extended duration. These are all things that critics AREN’T saying about Sarah Davachi YET, but surely it’s only a matter of time?? New album, The Will Of Tongues, an epic triple disc set, is out today, and contains whole worlds to get lost in - sung blood players, choral ecstasy, brass unisons, woodwind harmonics, an organ pulse from the heart of the universe. Thee true psychedelic mother lode. Out now on Late Music. Catch Sarah Davachi live this autumn in Los Angeles, Oakland, NYC, Leuven, Krakow, London, Namur, Montreal, Berlin and Venice.
