Figures referenced are from independent analysis by Imperial College London's Environmental Research Group, commissioned by the GLA and TfL, comparing modelled data between 2019 and 2024.
ββββββββββββ
New independent data shows that, between 2019 and 2024, deaths linked to air pollution in London have fallen by around 40% β with nitrogen dioxide down 41%, and fine particle pollution down 28%. That's thanks to bold clean air policies including ULEZ, the world's largest zone of its kind, introduced by Sir Sadiq Khan. As a doctor, that's not just numbers β it means fewer kids with asthma attacks, fewer emergency heart admissions, and toxic air's even been linked to dementia risk. There's still more to do β pollution still contributes to thousands of early deaths a year in London. But this shows what happens when a city takes bold action on public health.

βββββββββββ
The Met Office has issued only its second ever red extreme heat warning β and climate scientists say this could become the new normal. A Met Office projection published this week warns that by the 2050s, a heatwave comparable to 1976 could see temperatures reach 45Β°C in parts of the UK. We've already broken the June temperature record twice this year alone. As a doctor, extreme weather is an extreme health hazard β and the people who will suffer most are those who can least afford to protect themselves. This isn't just about hotter summers. It means more extreme weather overall β thunderstorms, flooding, and increasingly unpredictable seasons. We need to make some noise and pressure the people who can actually change this.

A red heat alert means a risk to life β not just for older people or those with underlying conditions, but for young, fit and healthy people too. Stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm, drink plenty of fluids and avoid alcohol, and if you need to cool down fast β take a cool shower, don't dry off, and sit in front of a fan. The evaporation will do the rest. Most importantly, please check on vulnerable people around you β young children, elderly neighbours, and anyone with an underlying health condition. Simple actions save lives today.

This UK heatwave is so humid that sweat can't evaporate off your skin β your body's main cooling system is failing. So here's what actually works. Apply ice or cold water to your pulse points β wrists, neck, groin, inner elbow, armpit β to cool the blood flowing through them and signal your hypothalamus to lower your core body temperature. Then don't dry off. Sit in front of a fan and let the airflow evaporate the water from your skin, pulling heat energy away from your body. Same science as sweating β but supercharged.

It's 40Β°C outside β but open water in the UK is still around 10-15Β°C. At least 40 people have drowned in France during this heatwave trying to cool down, most of them young people. The same risk exists here. Cold water shock causes involuntary gasping, blood vessel constriction, and heart rate spikes β even strong swimmers can drown within seconds. Open water also hides currents, underwater obstacles, and sudden depth drops with no lifeguards and no lanes. If you get into difficulty, don't panic β float on your back, ears just under the water, control your breathing, and shout for help. That's the RNLI's Float to Live advice. Please use a paddling pool, cold shower, or supervised lido instead.
