What to Look for When Commissioning a Luxury Interior Designer | Phasezero 17/09/2026

Commissioning a luxury interior designer is one of the most consequential decisions you will make for a property. Done well, it shapes how you live for years and compounds in value long after the contractors have left. Done poorly, you are left with an expensive space that never quite settles.

The difference usually comes down to how carefully you chose the studio, and what you looked for.

A portfolio tells part of the story. But the more revealing question is whether the work is responsive: does it reflect a studio capable of reading different buildings, different clients, different ways of living? Your property is not like any other. It has its own proportions, its own history, its own character. A studio worth commissioning will start there.

Specialism carries real weight for high-end residential and period buildings. A practice that has spent years on complex refurbishments brings established relationships with specialist contractors, deep knowledge of procurement and bespoke manufacture timelines, and fluency with the planning constraints that govern significant works in London's most desirable neighbourhoods. These are not incidental. They determine whether a project runs cleanly and arrives at what it was meant to be.

Process is the other thing most clients undervalue. A major interior commission is, in large part, a feat of sustained rigour: approvals, procurement, site coordination, budget management, and the alignment of many moving parts toward a single vision. How a studio manages all of that will shape the experience as much as any design decision.

And then there is listening. The designer who can deliver something genuinely extraordinary is the one who arrives with curiosity, not a fixed idea. Pay attention, in early conversations, to how much of the exchange is them asking and how much is them speaking.

We have written about this in more detail on the Phasezero blog, for anyone navigating this decision in London and the surrounding area.

Notting Hill is often talked about as if it were a style. It is not. It is a building stock with its own spatial logic, its own conservation constraints, and its own demands on anyone who wants to design well within it. A new piece on what Victorian terraces actually ask of the design process, and why the finest results there treat the building as the starting point.

A studio has a mark before it has a portfolio.

The Phasezero key has been there from the beginning: a symbol that opens rather than announces, that suggests entry rather than arrival. We animated it this week and watching the watercolour bloom from inside the form reminded me of why the identity works.

Colour is not decoration at Phasezero. It is a material decision, made the same way we choose wood or marble: for what it does to a room, not what it says about a trend. The orange, red, rose, teal, and blue in this mark are the same colours that show up in the work itself. They are not branding applied on top of the architecture. They come from it.

That is the position the practice has held since day one: start with the building. Everything else follows from there.

Colour is not decoration. It is not the thing you choose once everything else is finished.

The interiors that stay with you are the ones where someone made a decision — and committed to it. A dining room in deep chalky green. A kitchen lined in earthy terracotta tile. A bedroom where the walls, curtains, and bedhead are all in the same dusty lavender, each in a different texture.

At Phasezero, we think about stone, timber, and plaster as colour decisions, not just material choices. The palette begins long before anyone opens a paint chart.

What to Look for When Commissioning a Luxury Interior Designer There is a moment in every well-realised interior when a space stops feeling like a construction site and starts feeling like somewhere you have always belonged. A guest forms an impression of a hospitality space within seconds of arriving — before a word has been spoken. The quality of light, the scale of the entrance, the materials underfoot: these things communicate instantly, and they are all the product of deliberate design decisions.

The best hospitality interiors are not simply beautiful. They are environments built to make people feel a particular way, and to keep them feeling that way across the whole of their stay.

We have written about how great design shapes the guest experience.

Restoring a period property is a different undertaking from a standard refurbishment. It demands a thorough understanding of how old buildings work, what the planning system will support, and which craftspeople have the specialist knowledge to carry the work out properly.

The result, when it is done well, is a space with a depth and character that no new-build can replicate.

We have written about the craft and care that restoration requires.

Commissioning an interior designer is one of the most consequential decisions you will make for a property. A compelling portfolio is the starting point — but it is rarely the whole story.

The questions worth asking go deeper: how does the studio listen? How does it manage a complex brief? And how does its network of craftspeople and contractors translate a design into something that actually gets built well?

We have written about what to look for.

The most ignored wall in your house is right above your head. ⬆️

We spend so much time obsessing over paint swatches, art placement, and wainscoting, but we completely forget the "fifth wall."

A flat, uninspired ceiling is a massive missed opportunity for architectural volume. Adding structural beams, a wash of rich color, high-gloss paint, or strategic lighting completely changes the spatial dynamics of a room. It draws the eye up, expands the perceived height, and makes the entire environment feel completely deliberate and finished.

Look up, is your ceiling pulling its weight? Tap the link in our bio to book a design consultation and let’s elevate your entire space. ✨
