Half an hour later here is the 'after' photo with the 'before' on the next slide for comparison.
Not quite a chrome polish but I am aware of the heat generated and I don't want to melt the plastic where the metal joins.
It'll do... I seem to have heard before.
Next to check for smooth operator errrm I mean operation.

Follow Electronics Loop
Solenoid had around 9V but was not operating. Initial inspection of the area revealed a lot of corrosion. A quick clean up of the connector and solder pads yielded 12V but still no solenoid action.
Closer inspection revealed the solenoid plunger was corroded and seized in the body. A couple of hours of outside mechanical persuasion freed it up which allowed a full teardown, clean and polish.
Back together and actuating the mech as expected.
One issue resolved which has now opened up three new ones 😅
