NEW ALBUM 'Gold Dirt' available on www.elierees.bandcamp.com ‘Elie sings with great feel and emotion, then hits you with some punk attitude...great!’ - Jon Board, Programming & Operations Director, Bassment, Chelmsford
——
Lacing melodic folk/pop with an underlying punk vocal, singer-songwriter Elie Rees creates her own seductive and haunting brand by using writing as an outlet for talking about emotions and life, converting her feelings into music and lyrics. Recent accolades include multiple summers of festivals, including Belladrum, FolkEast, Sidmouth and Towersey, a UK Tour, reaching the finals of Essex’s popular Undiscovered Music Competition, countless radio play and signing a record deal with GingerDog Records. Elie’s latest project is her debut full-length album, recorded for the first time under label GingerDog Records and produced by renowned record producer Kevin Duncan. The new album, Gold Dirt, is the next step in Elie’s singer-songwriter career. The title track is a metaphor for quite literally wading through the dirt to pull out the good stuff. Featuring a number of talented musicians including James Delarre (Toppette!!, Mawkin, Eliza Carthy, Jim Moray) on fiddle and mandolin, Laurence Hunt (Lisa Knapp, Jim Sutherland, Eliza Carthy, Emily Portman) on drums and percussion and Sam Norman (Benji Kirkpatrick, Jim Moray, Brad Rabuchin, Pumana) on double bass and bass. Influenced by artists such as First Aid Kit, Brandi Carlile and Fiona Apple, Elie, a former professionally trained jazz flautist, uses emotion to create her own seductive and haunting brand. ‘I have to do this, if it wasn’t for that feeling, I’d do something that actually makes me more money!’.

I dunno who knows this but since I’ve been doing a lot more production work in the past couple of years I’ve decided to make it official by doing a masters degree in creative production. There’s a student showcase at The Dublin Castle in Camden and I’m gonna be playing a few songs.

Out walking. I’m super tired, a little snuffly and on a writing deadline. Usually, I would panic about not being on best form and try and reschedule work but I’m taking it slow and making pockets of focus. Getting in my DAW and sorting out some technical stuff like time stretching my enigma machine sound samples into musical time and mapping the ambient sound recordings to midi controller. I’m hoping I’ve set myself up for a quick burst of inspiration another day when all the ideas can come together in a coherent piece.

Meantime, what do you think of the green? I have to do some photos for my new project ‘Fen Woman’ that’s all about women embedded in folk songs and the earth. I always associate this landscape with noir black mud but I’ve also been thinking about colours for a website update to go with it and really loved this green.
