The National Opera Studio plays an essential role at the heart of British opera. The NOS is engaged by Arts Council England and the UK’s leading Opera Companies - English National Opera, Glyndebourne, Opera North, the Royal Opera House, Scottish Opera and Welsh National Opera – to provide professional training of the highest quality for singers and répétiteurs who have the potential to become the leading artists of their generation. The successful candidates are selected by the Opera Companies from hundreds of applicants. The training programmes for each artist, which are individually designed to meet their needs and aspirations, are provided by coaches who are the leaders in their disciplines. Young Artists also have regular opportunities to work closely with leading directors and conductors to prepare opera scenes for performance. The intensity of the training programme is designed to create a working environment that reflects the professional opera world. Many
NOS-trained singers have gone on to build successful careers at an international level. NOS-trained répétiteurs now work on the music staff of opera companies.

Tomorrow marks our first external performance with our 2026/27 Young Artists.
The Young Artists are currently busy in staging rehearsals for Overture, a dazzling programme of opera scenes ranging from Puccini’s La Bohème to Simon's The Secret Garden. After a canapé and w**e reception, the performance will be hosted by acclaimed Scottish Soprano Marie McLaughlin, and followed by a drinks reception. Booking closes tomorrow morning - it’s not one to miss!
Later this week, the Young Artists and some recent alums will audition for UK opera companies including Garsington Opera, Longborough Festival Opera, Opera Holland Park, Grange Park Opera, The Grange Festival and Glyndebourne in our Summer Festivals Day. This is a fantastic opportunity for our Young Artists to gain industry exposure, and book contracts for the busy summer season.

Are you passionate about bringing opera to young audiences? Well this short course might be for you 🎶
Delivering Opera in Primary Education is a free, five-day intensive course at the National Opera Studio, in partnership with the Royal Ballet and Opera.
Combining CPD sessions, workshops, observation opportunities and experience in local primary schools, this course gives opera singers and repetiteurs the practical skills, confidence and knowledge to work effectively with primary-aged children.

Congratulations to all the UK opera companies named as finalists in the 2026 International Opera Awards.
The winners will be announced in November in a ceremony at MusikTheater an der Wien, Vienna. The ceremony will be hosted by Petroc Trelawny, and livestreamed on OperaVision.

This week we’re looking forward to welcoming Ita O’Brien (Intimacy On Set) to the Studio to coach our Young Artists on all things staging intimacy. Katy Crompton (Askonas Holt) will also explain the world of opera agents and provide advice on building CVs.
On Wednesday we’re welcoming back Feargal Mostyn-Williams and Satoshi Kubo (2017/18 alums) for our first free Alum Recital of the year (Wednesday, 7pm).

"Think of the Russian language as a house with three floors. Let's take the tour."
Using this metaphor, Lada illustrates the fluid nature of Russian, and how its sound production shifts between different levels. To sing idiomatically, performers must transition smoothly between these ‘floors’, and often find that Russian is more active and generally higher in placement than they first perceive.
Lada’s running a free workshop on Russian and Czech pronunciation for singers at the National Opera Studio on Saturday 5th of December.
