The Giant Vallis green ceiling. It used to grow like mad. Its showing signs but I didnt do anything special before. And its taking quite a lot of effort to get it going again.
The weekly discus maintenance routine. Heres all the details, trying to keep it consistent. The water is better, the consistency is better. The nitrates are much lower. I may increase the feeding a little but dont want to change too much. Lets see how the fish react.

Today's nitrate test: barely a trace 🎉
For months my discus tank sat at 20-40 ppm nitrate, even with RO water changes. Now it's reading almost nothing, and I'm actually having to dose a little KNO₃ for the plants. Adding nitrate after all that effort feels daft, so I'm rechecking my maths.
I'm increasingly convinced chronic high nitrates were behind my discus health problems. The lack of minerals from all that RO water, even with remineralising, probably made it worse. No wonder the plants were struggling too.
One test isn't proof, so let's see how the fish and plants respond over the next few weeks. I'll keep you posted.
Discus tank update - Ive a lot of issues, Im aware. It used to be very good, theres reason why it no longer is. However, it will get sorted. I already have the nitrates under control. The kh, gh and ph are all good (pH is currently 7.2). Good water is the best medicine. I dont think meds will do anymore. Ive tried them all and I have my own thoughts on those and why and when they are needed. Let me know if this is of interest. Its worts and all and if it helps someone thats great. Any constructive assistance gratefully appreciated.

Beautiful koi pond bogs
I love plants but the koi dont so problem solved. A beautiful bog filter, looks good, provides shade, its koi vandal proof and it should hoover up those nitrates like a dyson at a dust convention. Organics will be gone, water will be clear and Ill have some plants in the koi ponds.
