From the archive: Albina Shagimuratova takes on the dazzling coloratura of “Dolce pensiero” from Rossini’s Semiramide.

In this spectacular moment from Semiramide, the cabaletta following Semiramide’s celebrated cavatina, “Bel raggio lusinghier”.

Shagimuratova stars as the Queen of Babylon in Opera Rara’s complete studio recording of Rossini’s final Italian opera, conducted by Sir Mark Elder with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Opera Rara Chorus.

Recorded using historical instruments and restoring passages traditionally cut from modern performances, the four-disc recording reveals the extraordinary scale and richness of Rossini’s score.

The critics were equally impressed. Gramophone praised Shagimuratova’s vocal brilliance, while BBC Music Magazine described her as “captivating”, with a gleaming soprano that “seems to have no upward limit”.

The recording went on to win the 2019 International Opera Award for CD (Complete Opera), International Classical Music Award and OPUS KLASSIK Award for Best Opera Recording.

Did you know Barkouf isn’t the only time Offenbach put an animal centre stage? 🦜

Before Barkouf, discover Vert-Vert — a wonderfully eccentric opera about a young parrot, an actress, a convent… and, inevitably, chaos.

Offenbach’s Vert-Vert is a wonderfully eccentric opera about a young parrot whose arrival in Nevers sets tongues - and hearts - fluttering.

Featuring Toby Spence, Jennifer Larmore, Lucy Crowe and the Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by David Parry.

A travelling circus, an innocent prince in love with a waxwork and a lottery ticket offering the chance to win a magnificent castle… what could possibly go wrong? Premiered in 1869, La Princesse de Trébizonde is a joyous work that showcases Offenbach’s inventive orchestration, delicate harmonies and gift for unforgettable theatrical moments.

Following the award-winning releases of Robinson Crusoe, Vert-Vert and Fantasio, Opera Rara presents its fourth complete opera recording by Offenbach – whose pioneering music influenced generations of composers across the 19th and 20th centuries.

Conducted by Paul Daniel, this premiere recording of Jean-Christophe Keck’s critical edition features an outstanding cast including Virginie Verrez and Anne-Catherine Gillet. The recording also includes extracts from the original Baden-Baden version of the opera.

We hope you enjoy discovering—or rediscovering—this enchanting Offenbach gem throughout September. ❤️
