Family Rights Group: Helping Families Helping Children. We campaign for families to have their voice. And to better understand social work concerns.
This is an open and un-moderated Facebook group which can be viewed by anyone accessing the site. Posters are therefore advised not to post any private or confidential information about themselves or their children. We advise families when they are involved with children’s services or need their help. We provide advice for parents, grandparents, relatives and friends including kinship carers in England. Our expert advisers are all experienced lawyers, social workers or family rights advocates. They help families to understand the law and child welfare processes and their rights and options.

Your child is probably getting used to their new teacher or teachers for this school year. But did you know that each state school in England is required to have a Designated Teacher?
Their role is to promote the educational attainment of children who are looked after in the care system – including those living in kinship foster carer.
They should also promote the educational attainment of children who used to be looked after in the care system but who are now cared for under either a:
• Child arrangements order,
• Special guardianship order or
• residence order.

The voices of children and young people must be at the centre of conversations about improving children's residential care 📣
We were delighted to attend the TRC 2026 Summit with three members of our young people's advisory group, AJ, Bayley and Mackenzie.
The young people joined a panel alongside Celeste, Vera and Danny sharing their views on what quality children's residential care looks like and what truly matters to young people.
Over the two days, delegates from across the world came together to discuss how we can better measure and improve children's residential care. One message stood out: young people's voices must be at the heart of these conversations.
We heard wonderful feedback from attendees, many of whom spoke about the power of hearing directly from young people with lived experience. Their honesty, insight and expertise helped shape important discussions and reminded everyone why young people's perspectives are essential in driving meaningful change.
A huge well done to AJ, Bayley and Mackenzie. We are incredibly proud of the impact they had and grateful to Dr Lisa Holmes and the team for creating space for lived experience to lead the conversation.

Families involved with children’s services can sometimes feel practitioners or managers are making all the decisions. Or that the family does not have much say. A family group conference is a planning meeting led by the family and arranged by an independent person. The process ensures that families are at the centre of decision-making.

Most children in England will be settling into the new school year. But did you know that if the child you are raising is:
• looked after in the care system – including children in kinship foster care, or
• previously looked after in the care system but are now cared for under a child arrangements order, special guardianship order or residence order
their school may be entitled to extra funding called pupil premium plus.
Pupil premium plus aims to improve educational outcomes of certain children.
It is provided to, and managed by, schools. The local Virtual School Head role decides how to best spend Pupil Premium Plus funding.

What is a ‘child in need’?
A child in need is a child who is thought to need extra support or services to help them to achieve or maintain ‘a reasonable standard of health or development’.
All disabled children are classed as children in need.

This week, as part of our role coordinating the APPG on Kinship Care we have been in Parliament. We were joined by Kate Dearden, Minister for the Future of Work, to talk about employment leave for kinship carers.
Stefan Spargo, a member of our kinship carers’ panel raising his three nephews, shared his experience with MPs and Peers, including how he had to leave work entirely when the children came to live with him.
Our surveys have shown that 6 in 10 kinship carers give up work or reduce their hours when the child comes to lives with them. Many do not return to full time employment and are often reliant on the benefit system.
Kinship carers take on children in sudden and often traumatic circumstances, yet unlike new parents or adopters, they have no statutory right to paid leave.
The Minister spoke about how the Government is reviewing how well the parental leave and pay system supports working families - and kinship families are a crucial part of that review, due to finish early next year.
We shared analysis we commissioned which showed that introducing paid kinship employment leave would not only support families but deliver a net benefit to the taxpayer and society, returning £2.40 for every £1 invested.
