Michael Jackson, Grime & Dubstep… Three things you probably wouldn’t expect to hear in the same sentence. But in 2004, a South London producer was making music that connected the dots.
“Cha” was built entirely from samples, including the distinctive snare taken from Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”. At the time, Plasticman was right at the centre of when Grime and Dubstep were still developing alongside each other, before the links between the two sounds had really been established. There were several versions too, including a vocal mix featuring Shizzle, Fresh & Napper, a Benga remix, a VIP & an illusive Zomby remix.
Cha was was stripped back, bass heavy music made for the darker side of the UK underground and it became one of the tunes that really connected, as well as getting supported by DJs across multiple genres. It was even picked up by the late John Peel & showcased on his Radio One show pushing the track to a whole new audience.

10 years on : Celebrating the life and photography of Shaun Bloodworth
If you know Tempa, Rinse, FWD>>, Hyperdub or early Dubstep, there’s a good chance you’ve seen Shaun Bloodworth’s work. Born in Sheffield, Shaun became a photographer and filmmaker in 1989 but his work stretched far beyond music before becoming celebrated for documenting underground music culture.
Our paths crossed at a sold out event at the West Indian Centre in Leeds (A community centre that hosted the biggest Dubstep night in the North of England), where Shaun was photographing Skream. In 2006, that photograph became the cover of Skream’s self-titled debut album, Skream!. The original plan was to shoot outside, but after spotting some shifty characters nearby they moved inside. As the venue was rammed the only space they could find suitable to shoot was at the bottom of a ramp leading into the main room, close to the toilets and fire exit. In that dark corner I watched Shaun capture the image and at the time I had no idea it would become one of the defining images of that era.
Before camera phones, photographers like Shaun created a visual record of a scene finding its identity. That’s why his work resonates with me as he documented the people, clubs and spaces where the music was happening. Shaun and the artists would often simply shoot where they were hanging out, DJing or where they were from. It was about capturing reality and allowing the artists and their environments to naturally tell their own story through his imagery.
For this post I was fortune to get some well known pictures but also some never shared publicly. I also dug through projects, releases and mixes connected to Shaun’s photography and legacy. All the music comes from records and mixes connected to his art.
Shaun Bloodworth didn’t just photograph the scene.
He helped preserve it.

Dark UK Garage Classics 1996
30 years ago in 1996 a UK Garage track sampled a horror movie & helped shape a sound that added a much darker tone to the genre.
The track took the tension of the 1991 film and turned it into a stripped back, moody roller with menacing drums, warped bass and that unmistakable “Cape Fear” sample.
Fast forward to 2011 and featured it as part of his Fabric Live 59 mix, introducing it to a whole new generation & audience.
