Ugarit – The Secret of Purple

How could a tiny creature from the Mediterranean Sea give rise to one of the most celebrated colours of the ancient world?

In “Ugarit – The Secret of Purple”, PRIME24 takes you on a documentary journey to Ugarit and the eastern shores of the Mediterranean, exploring the remarkable story of a colour born in the sea and transformed by human knowledge and craftsmanship.

The story begins with the small Murex snail. From a substance hidden within this marine creature, ancient craftsmen learned to produce a precious dye through a demanding process that required large quantities of shells, careful preparation, time, air and light.

From the hands of fishermen, the secret passed to craftsmen and weavers. Woollen threads absorbed the colour, textiles emerged from the loom, and valuable fabrics became part of a wider world of trade, wealth and status.

Ugarit and its harbour were part of an interconnected maritime network linking the cities of the eastern Mediterranean with Cyprus, Egypt, Anatolia and beyond. Archaeological evidence shows that Ugarit belonged to this world of purple-dye production, although the evidence does not allow us to say that Ugarit alone invented purple.

Across the centuries, the knowledge survived. In the Phoenician cities of the coast, the craft would later achieve widespread fame, with Tyre becoming closely associated with the legendary Tyrian purple.

But behind the wealth, royal garments and prestige lies a much more human story — a story of fishermen, craftsmen, knowledge passed between generations, and the Mediterranean Sea that connected cities and cultures.

Civilisations disappeared. Kingdoms changed. Ugarit became ruins.

But the sea remained.

And so did the story of a colour that travelled across the ancient world and survived for thousands of years.

In a world that never stops changing, seeing what happens is no longer enough.
We want to understand why it happens.

Welcome to PRIME24 — a platform where stories, ideas, knowledge and creativity come together.

We return to history not simply to recount the past, but to explore the ideas, symbols and stories that shaped civilisations and continue to influence our world today.

We look at the present from a broader perspective — exploring economics, major ideas and concepts, global transformations, and the forces shaping the world around us. Through documentaries, analysis and podcast programmes, we go beyond the headlines to examine the background, causes and deeper questions behind the events we see every day.

But PRIME24 is about more than history, economics and analysis.

It is also about people — their journeys, dreams, memories and stories.

It is about cultures and places, nature and discovery, art and music, and the creative expressions that cross borders and connect people.

And because curiosity begins with a question, PRIME24 also creates imaginative and engaging content for children and younger audiences — making the platform a place of discovery for the whole family.

Ugarit – The Secret of Purple

NIKKAL – MOON GODDESS | PART TWO
When Ugarit Brought a Voice from the Ancient World Back to Life

More than three thousand years ago, on the ancient Syrian coast, a hymn was written onto a small clay tablet.

Its words belonged to the Hurrian world. Alongside them were instructions connected to music — traces of a sound that had been silent for millennia.

In Part Two of “Nikkal – Moon Goddess”, PRIME24 returns to ancient Ugarit to explore one of the most remarkable surviving connections between archaeology, language and music.

How were the musical instructions on the tablet interpreted?

How much can we truly know about the way this ancient music may once have sounded?

And behind the archaeological discovery lies an even more human question: who was the woman whose words were addressed to Nikkal, and what hope might she have carried in her heart?

The documentary follows the extraordinary journey of the tablet from the ancient world into modern scholarship, examining the Hurrian language and the attempts to understand and reconstruct its musical information.

It also explores the interpretation of Italian researcher Raoul Vitale and the musical work of Syrian musician Ziad Ajjan — an attempt to draw closer to a sound separated from us by more than three millennia.

But this is more than the story of an ancient tablet.

It is a story about human memory.

Civilisations disappear. Cities fall silent. Languages can be forgotten. Yet sometimes, a fragment survives — a few words pressed into clay, a musical instruction, a prayer — allowing a distant human voice to reach us across thousands of years.

From the ruins of Ugarit, that voice speaks again.

Polycrisis | Ideas That Shook the World – Episode 10

What happens when the world is no longer facing one crisis at a time — but several crises that collide, interact, and make each other worse?

An economic shock can disrupt markets. A war can reshape energy supplies. Rising energy costs can affect food production and transportation. Climate pressures can intensify shortages, while technological and geopolitical disruptions add new layers of uncertainty.

This is the idea behind Polycrisis.

It describes a world in which major crises do not simply happen side by side. They become interconnected — with the effects of one crisis spreading into other systems and creating consequences that may be difficult to predict or contain.

In this episode of Ideas That Shook the World, we explore how economic instability, conflict, energy, food, climate, technology, and global supply chains can become part of the same complex web.

The question is no longer simply: What caused the crisis?

It may be: What happens when several crises begin feeding into one another at the same time?

Discover why understanding a single crisis may no longer be enough. Watch the full episode now:
