“The Gombeys are a dance and percussive band tradition native to Bermuda, whose roots can be traced back to the 1800s. Made up of members of the African, Caribbean, and Native American diaspora, their heritage has held strong across centuries. The word “gombey”—or “gumba”—comes from an African Bantu word meaning “rhythm” or “drum.” Most Gombey performances showcase a blend of marching band percussion, metal whistles, hand-made sculptural tools, and graceful dance choreography, alongside masked dancers and drummers, led by a captain who instructs the assembly on each move”
