✨Brand Partnerships NOW OPEN ✨

The woman who reads FRIDAY has impeccable taste. But you knew that already 😉

She reads slowly, thinks deeply and she returns to the brands she trusts.

If that sounds like your customer, she’s already turning our pages and loving everything she sees 🫶🏼

Edition #04 is open for Partnerships to brands who align with our values and want to connect to our audience.

New to print advertising? No worries, we now have design templates to make it easy for you or you can hand it to our trusted designer to take the weight off your mind.

To find out more, request the media kit via the link in bio, or comment PARTNER and we’ll send it straight to your DMs.

Six years ago, I ran our first ever reader survey. I had no idea what the response would be, just a handful of questions and a lot of hope that women would share a passion for the idea I had.

Two years post launch, it feels like the right time to pose some questions again and check in with our intentions.

Last week I spent two days surrounded by peers from the independent magazine world and honestly, I left questioning a lot of what we are currently doing and why we’re doing it. We’ve published three amazing editions, hosted seven packed out events, yet I still know there’s more we can do to serve our community.

So it’s time I did one again.

Can you spare a few minutes of your time? Everything is on the table, and I want your honest answers, not the polite ones you think I want to hear.

It’s anonymous so say it like it is, and there’s a little discount code waiting for you at the end too.

Link to the survey is in the bio, or on my stories today.

Six years of building FRIDAY, Alhamdulilah 🤲🏼 Can’t wait to serve you for another six 🫶🏼

Thank you for being part of the journey, whenever you joined us 🤍

There’s not many magazines for Muslims, so making them sometimes gets a bit lonely. It’s easy to get stuck in a comfortable bubble and lately, especially after the Identity edition, I’ve been asking myself some existential questions about what Friday is doing and where I want to take it.

I was invited to speak Magazine Street, their annual un-conference conference to share about the journey of building Friday so naturally writing out that speech made me reflect a lot. Maybe I’ll share it here too, but being surrounded by so many cool beans making even cooler magazines has left me full of ideas, excitement, and that spark I felt I was losing.

I’ve made some pretty whacky magazines in the past and I’ve loved making the last three editions but I’m excited to grow into our next phase. End of volume 1, the start of volume 2 maybe…

Thanks to Nikki for putting on a great experience, for looking after every single person in the room and for the endless supply of IrnBru. Much love to everyone who was curious about Friday and genuinely interested in what we do.

It’s not easy to talk about faith in rooms where very few people share your beliefs, but being seen, welcomed and respected goes a long way. Leaving with a heart full of new mag buddies and a head full of new ideas.

Mission accomplished.

“Too often, we are taught that being a good Muslim woman, a good daughter, a good mother, means smoothing ourselves out, quietening our edges, and meeting everyone else’s expectations.

But I am here to say: you weren’t meant to lose yourself in your roles. You were meant to bring yourself fully into them.

The world doesn’t need another quiet, apologetic version of you. It needs your boldness, your intellect, your laughter, your critique, and yes, even your frustration. All of it.

It’s time to show up, fully, unapologetically, as you.”

Maryam Javaid’s Maryam | TEDx Speaker | Parenting & Intergenerational Healing Closing Words were the perfect sign off for our Identity edition but they were also words that deserve to be read over and over again.

The conversations, stories and essays throughout this particular edition were meant to open an awareness in Muslim women, that Identity work is something that needs our attention, effort, and constant renewal.

Whether Maryam’s words or any others you read in this edition, we know you’ll be walking a little taller once you strengthen your identity too.

“I came here for you,” my dad would say to us kids. “Why else would I spend six months of the year in the freezing cold when I don’t even speak French?”

The foundations of our Maslowian pyramid have been secured. We are educated. We are housed. We are employed. We have provided for ourselves and our families successfully.

And yet, rather than moving beyond the self, many of us remain fixated on preservation, of comfort, of status, of ease, leaving little room for much else.

Like the grown elephant who does not realize it is no longer bound by the small peg in the ground, we too have failed to recognize that we are safe to progress beyond survival mode. That we can detach from the status quo and walk an alternate path.

For the Identity edition, badil.alt reflected on something many children of immigrants are experiencing as a result of searching for purpose, also fueled by host societies that demand gratitude while simultaneously reminding them of their ‘otherness’.

“You can’t have it all.”
“You’re doing too much.”
“Jack-of-all-trades.”
“Pick one. Build a career or raise a family.”

As women, we’re often encouraged to conform to a single role or identity. As Muslim women, especially, we face so many societal and cultural pressures to follow a specific path, limiting our options in both personal and professional life. Yet, as cliché as it sounds, the sky’s the limit and Muslim women continue to embrace their multifaceted identities, making waves across their respective fields.

For the Identity edition, Muminah Koleoso 🇳🇬🇬🇧Muminah K | Award-Winning Writer, Poet & Content Creator interviewed Sahra-Isha Muhammad Jones Sahra-Isha Jennifer
Ogunyemi Jennifer Ogunyemi - Business coach | Speaker and Dr Muti’ah Badru Muti'ah Badruddeen on how their multihyphenate journeys really look, how they came to be so, and what advice they’d give to embrace yours fully.

Read the full lowdown in Embracing Multiplicity in the Identity edition, available to subscribe and order at the link in the bio.
